Paramedics safety

South Africa -- Female paramedics in Durban Deep and Johannesburg are scared for their own safety - and it appears more than rightfully so after reading this news article by timeslive.co.za.

The work force has been promised the female paramedics self-defense training for more than a year and some has gone through that. But do they send the ones being out there doing the job...? Oh no - these knuckleheads send the managers. Yeah, you read that right. Smart move... Not.

One female paramedic said the panic buttons that the paramedics carry have never been used because they do not work. Her shift commander said the batteries are flat. Brilliant excuse, playing with people lives like that...

Personal alarm

Swedish media reports about 15-year-old girl who was assaulted by an unknown man in Oerebro.

The man, described as 25 - 30 years of age, allegedly attempted to rape the teenager on Sunday at around 9:45 p.m.

The girl reportedly managed to set off her personal alarm, scaring the masked attacker off.

Quick thinking

"(...) very good and quick thinking on her part. This probably prevented her from further attacks," an Indianapolis, Indiana police spokesperson said, according to wishtv.com.

Police say the woman was attacked in a parking garage on one of the busiest streets in the downtown area. The incident occurred in the middle of the afternoon when a lot of people were leaving work.

The woman was allegedly entering her car when the suspect put his hand around her mouth and pushed her into the car, police say.

The intended victim pushed the "panic" button on her keychain. When the attacker heard the horn and saw the flashing lights, he took off running.

Hazards at work, 26

A recent attack on a nurse at Marquette Branch Prison suggests officials are classifying dangerous criminals as low-risk to save money, a union leader said.

State police are investigating reports that a 57-year-old rapist assaulted the female nurse on Saturday during an examination for abdominal pain.

The prisoner choked the nurse and threatened her with a razor blade he had concealed in his mouth.

The woman fought back and knocked a phone off the hook, setting off an alarm. Corrections officers subdued the inmate.

The man was assigned to the prison's minimum-security Trusty Division, despite six criminal sexual conduct convictions.

Hi tech defense

Even though this report is from May 2006, it should still be well worth a read. Good use of technology, I'd say!

Japan -- A youngster used her cell phone to alert Kai police that a friend was being abducted, leading to the arrest of a kidnapping suspect.

The suspect allegedly tried to grab a 6-year-old girl Tuesday as she left the JR Shiozaki Station in Kai. The suspect fled on a motorbike after the girl set off a security alarm in her bag.

Her friend got a photo of the teenager and the license plate of his motorbike, as he sped away, information that enabled police to track the 16-year-old down.

Hazards at work, 4

Ireland -- The IHCA has called on the Health Service Executive (HSE) to fulfil its legal obligations and duty of care to its staff following a number of attacks on its members.

Consultant psychiatrist Dr Jane Falvey, from St Senan’s, Enniscorthy, told the conference she had recently had a narrow escape after a patient tried to assault her.

The secretary general of the association Mr Finbarr Fitzpatrick said they had asked the HSE for a security review of hospitals.

“In one instance,” he said, “I know the panic buttons were tested in a hospital and something like 12 out of 24 did not work. In another instance,” he said, “where a consultant was attacked, he had to ring the switch rather than ring the panic button because it wasn’t there.”

Amber watch

The Amber Watch is gaining favor among child safety advocates. The watch was designed to help kids escape immediate danger, regardless of whether that's an attempted abduction, animal attack or simply being lost in a crowd.

The alarm on these kid-styled accessories is easily activated by pushing two small buttons on its side, and deactivated in the same way. But a skeptic's caution: The watch should come with an even-headed, parent-to-kid face-to-face so that this portable ear-buster is used as it's intended and not turned into a playground novelty.

The Amber Watch sells for $29.99 at Target. $1 from each one sold is donated to the AmberWatch Foundation.

Raising alarm

Here is a great example of using your wits. Another similar example would be making noise by setting off a car burglary alarm. Even if you have to break a window in a shop or similar to set of an alarm I advise you to do so in an emergency.
It is far better to pay for the damage (like a broken window) rather than being victim of a serious crime!

Story:
South Africa: Dino Bava and his girlfriend were walking the two blocks to his home from a shopping centre near the Northgate mall when two men attacked them.

"They didn't say 'Stop'; they didn't say anything," said Bava, adding that the attack happened in March around 7pm. "They were trying to just get me out of the way so they could do whatever they wanted to do to her."

Bava's girlfriend managed to trigger a nearby house alarm, after which the police were called and the attackers fled. Bava suffered a stab wound during the attack.

Absolutely brilliant self-defense execution by these two girls!

Good job!

UK -- A woman fought off a knife-wielding attacker using only a personal alarm and skills learnt on a self-defence course.

The 48-year-old Italian was confronted by a man with a knife in the backstreets of London.

She kept her head, and, whipping out the personal alarm given to her as part of the course, the deafening noise scared of her assailant, who left empty handed.

She said she had realised he was following her: "We had been taught to notice our surroundings on the course and I realised it was important to take control of the situation.
