It is always hard to determine how much force - and what type of force - is needed in any type of altercation.
It is very easy to be wise after the event! However, it may seem like these folks here (from Rootstown Township, Ohio) didn't have the skills and training needed to restrain a shoplifter who tried to take off - something very few have any type of experience to deal with unfortunately.
It is not too difficult if you work as a team - and if you have the proper type of techniques to hold someone (alone it is very difficult, no matter what your training might be).
What most people do wrong is to use too much weight upon a prone person - in effect choking the person to death, or using too much force on the neck or chest.
If something goes terribly wrong, you may end up being the target of a lawsuit, like the people in this case seems to be subject to.
In January 2004, a shop-lifter walked to a store parking lot after loading a cart with groceries. A manager and an employee approached the man, whereupon he attacked the employee. The two workers and two passers-by tried to restrain the man while waiting for police.
With the four men on top of him, the man died of asphyxiation from force applied to his neck and torso within minutes. A County coroner reportedly ruled the death a homicide.

A fight for life
It is worth repeating; someone who believe they are fighting for their life has a tremendous amount of strength. The same goes if you decide you will not be taken down.
Is it always possible to fight back, or is it always wise to fight back? Of course not. Still, stories like this one here is a reminder of our possibilities in what may be called a worst case scenario.
Story
Canada.com reported about a 53-year-old convicted robber and rapist who attempted to rob a convenience store in Windsor, Ontario. Using a fake gun, plus a rather odd disguise made up of wig, heart-shaped shades, cowboy hat and fake beard - he lost what was referred to as a violent struggle with the 34-year-old diminutive female clerk.
A superior court judge told how the clerk thought she was going to be raped and perhaps killed. Lacerated and bloody, she believed she was fighting for both her sexual integrity and her life, the court heard.
The case prosecutor said the woman "fought valiantly" against the man. He struck the woman and held her down. But she fought back, scratching and biting the assailant, leaving "telltale marks" that police saw when he was later arrested.
The attempted robbery and rape failed because the female clerk got the better of a much larger, heavier and stronger man, the judge said.
The man walked into the store in September 2005 and demanded the keys to the place from the clerk, so that he could lock them both inside. The court was told how the man, in addition to his disguise and weapon, had a bag filled with duct tape, a knife and fake bomb.
A police report explained how the woman struggled the fake gun away from the attacker and actually hit him with it.The man fled the store after the fight, leaving his bag behind.

Shoplifters
UK -- Shop workers have spoken out about the violent attacks they face on a daily basis, according to hartlepoolmail.co.uk.
Statistics reveal more than 10,000 workers nationwide were injured in attacks last year. And more than 60 per cent were caused by shoplifters trying to escape with their stolen goods.
According to figures from the Union of Shop Distributive and Allied Workers (Usdaw), more than 10,000 shop workers in the UK were physically attacked in 2006 alone. Around two thirds of those incidents centred around apprehending shoplifters.
The dangers facing shop staff were highlighted this week by the case of named female shoplifter.
The 18-year-old drug addict was jailed after she assaulted three members of staff at a bargains store in Hartlepool.
The offender punched, bit and spat at the three women workers, because they tried to prevent her from leaving the store with two stolen dolls - worth £4.99 each.

A 'chest-nut'
Metro.co.uk reports about a would-be shoplifter who squirted her breast milk at a store detective when he tried to stop her stealing goods.
The woman allegedly exposed her breasts and fired away after being confronted at a Co-op store.
The attack in Leicester, UK is thought to be the latest in a trend in which thieves try to get their DNA on security officers so they can accuse them of sexual attacks if caught.
A security company representative said: 'It started off with people picking their noses until they bleed and then accusing staff of assault.'

Iron man
Sweet - hats off to this senior citizen!
Strange how these "tough guys" are not so tough after all when someone takes their "toys" away and doesn't want to play their game.
Story:
74-year-old Bruce Ferraro had no idea someone was following him as he walked out of a department store at the South Shore Mall in New York on Saturday and got into his car, according to News.yahoo.com.
The mugger demanded Ferraro hand over his wallet, calling the Bay Shore resident an "old man" and threatening to hit him with the tire iron, police said.
Instead, Ferraro grabbed the bar and the two fought, until the septuagenarian managed to snatch away the tire iron, police said.
Without the weapon, the 32-year-old suspect ran to his car and attempted to drive away, police said. But the vehicle stalled, and the man got out of the car and fled on foot. Ferraro later helped police identify the suspect.

He was stunned

'Yankee-do'
Don't mess with granny! Don't they teach kids this lesson today?
Story:
The Yankees have honored a robber-bashing Bronxville grandmother of eight yesterday in a home plate ceremony.
The 68-year-old woman foiled an April 26 robbery at a sandwich shoppe in Tuckahoe where she worked by smacking the robber with a 1961 Yankees miniature bat.
With her 16-inch weapon in hand, she waved to the stadium crowd when she was introduced yesterday, then got a surprise when Derek Jeter came out of the dugout and presented her with a real bat signed by the team and gave her a hug.
During the attempted robbery last month, the man told the woman he had a gun, and demanded she empty the cash register. The lifelong Yankees fan said she threw the money on the floor, then as he was bending over to pick it up, grabbed her commemorative bat and hit him in the back of the head twice. He dropped the money and ran out of the store.

One tought customer
I'm not sure if this was the smartest thing to do. Still, I must say I'm impressed by this senior citizen!
Story:
A suspect, who was in his 20's, walked into a shop in North Nashville on Sunday night. Police say he held up the clerk, then turned the gun on a customer.
That customer, a 77 year old man, wrestled the gun away from the suspect and shot the suspect in the leg. The elderly man was not hurt.

Quite alarming statistics regarding Wal-Mart ...
Story:
Wal-Mart complexes experience a significant number of police incidents, more so than at other shopping complexes. This is according to a national study published less than a year ago by United Food and Commercial Workers International Union at WakeUpWalMart.com.
The study examined police reports associated with 551 Wal-Mart stores across the country. It collected data from 404 police departments from 434 cities and towns.
The study demonstrates that nationally, Wal-Mart stores cost local taxpayers an estimated $77 million in increased police costs in 2004.
What the report calls "magnet for crime" is not limited to merely in-store crimes like shoplifting and check forgery. Included is also violent and serious crimes including rape, attempted rape, aggravated assault, burglary, auto-theft, arson, narcotics, kidnapping and murder.
The report shows that there were 1,024 auto thefts reported at Wal-Mart stores, 154 sex crimes, 23 kidnappings or attempted kidnappings and 1,145 assaults with a deadly weapon.

Hazards at work, 38
Oh yes, that's a fine way to raise your children - a swell mother and outstanding citizen indeed!
Story:
UK -- A shop assistant has been attacked by an angry customer who threw a bottle at her after complaining about the price of her shopping.
Witnesses said there was blood 'all over the floor' when the shop worker was attacked by the woman who was with her two children.
The shopper hit out at the assistant at Savers Health and Beauty in Woolwich at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
The woman had been turned away from the shop because she had become abusive, saying "I'll knock you out".
She exploded when the price of her shopping came to £51, and returned 20 minutes later when staff again refused to serve her. The shopper then turned violent.
"We refused to serve her so she kicked off, started running her pram into other customers. She called us racist. Then she threw a bottle at me, a full bottle of water. It must have been the lid that hit me because it cut into my head and there was blood all over my head."
The shop assistant says she has been suffering from headaches since the incident.

She's a knock-out
I'm tempted to repeat a rather common phrase: Only in America...
Where else could someone sue for being "attacked" by a store mannequin, you know the type that are used for displaying clothes - yep the man-made, lifeless ones?
Weird as this story may be, it shows something that you should be aware of. I'm referring to the "shopping-like psychosis" that some - mostly women - enter when they are working on their black belts in shopping.
When I did loss prevention work it was quite scary to see how people could literally try to walk over or through you to get to the items they had set their hungry eyes on. Their only concern was to "shop till you drop", and consequently they got tunnel vision and no awareness what so ever about the surroundings.
Did pick-pockets and thieves have a field-day during the big sales? It was like stealing candy from a baby - credit cards, codes, cash and open bags just floating around. Not to mention all the kids that where running all over the place while mommy was doing a *little* shopping...
The best part: These people couldn't understand how someone could steal from them (oh no, not ME!). Some also got very aggressive when you pointed out to them that their wallet was lying unattended or their precious child was about to exit into the streets.
Story:
LA -- A woman is suing the J.C. Penney Co. after an alleged run-in with a store mannequin that she says left her with a cracked tooth, a bloodied head and recurring shoulder pain.
Diana Newton, 51, of Westminster sued the Texas-based retailer last month in Orange County Superior Court, claiming she was cracked in the head by a legless female dummy at its Westminster Mall store.
Newton said the incident happened nearly a year ago in the women's department, as she was shopping for a blouse. The only one in her size was on the mannequin. As a salesclerk was removing the garment, the dummy's arm flew off and struck Newton's head, according to her lawsuit.

Don't bring a knife
...to a gun fight!
That's a pretty obvious observation, right?
Not for this guy who went into a gun shop in Auckland, New Zealand, with robbery in mind. Alas, he had armed himself only with a machete. According to reports he was immediately shot.
