Self-defense nightstand

For those places (for instance home) where a gun is not an option, how about a nightstand you can quickly use to defend yourself and your family/loved ones? Gladiator home safety?

Paramedics safety

South Africa -- Female paramedics in Durban Deep and Johannesburg are scared for their own safety - and it appears more than rightfully so after reading this news article by timeslive.co.za.

The work force has been promised the female paramedics self-defense training for more than a year and some has gone through that. But do they send the ones being out there doing the job...? Oh no - these knuckleheads send the managers. Yeah, you read that right. Smart move... Not.

One female paramedic said the panic buttons that the paramedics carry have never been used because they do not work. Her shift commander said the batteries are flat. Brilliant excuse, playing with people lives like that...

A scary list

Idaho -- A convicted Ontario sex offender has allegedly made a list of 32 girls to "look up" once he gets out of jail. Now parents worry for their children's safety as the man is soon to be released.

One parent talked about how their kids in effect were prisoners. "we don't know what to do to make it better for them," the parent said.

Sheriff's deputies reportedly found a list the man had written. It was titled "people to look up". 32 local girls between the ages of 6 and 17 were on the list, including his original 15 year old victim.

In order to come up with his list, authorities alleges the man read newspaper articles about the girls. It is said the list is so detailed it that had everything short of an address to look these girls up.

And still we somehow tend to hang on to this all-to-prevalent idea about 'random violence'...

Watch out!

Most people buying and selling through auction sites and classified ads are honest. Unfortunately there are also some bad seeds.

Story:
D.N.A. evidence links an attempted sexual assault case in Colorado Springs from 2004, to more cases nation-wide, and bringing up questions about how to stay safe when selling things through newspaper and internet classifieds.

Ebay, Craigslist, your local paper... they're all great places to unload your unwanted clutter, but El Paso County detectives say they also can make you a prime target for crime.

In August 2004, a woman living in an apartment in Cimarron Hills advertises her wedding dress in a local paper. A potential buyer showed up wielding a gun.

Increase in reports

East Tennessee State University -- There were three reported cases of sexual assault on campus in 2006, up from one in 2005, according to a public safety officer.

"I'm not alarmed by the increase," said the coordinator of outreach programs at the counseling center. "I'm more concerned about people who aren't getting help that need help."

The coordinator said the increase in reported sexual assaults does not suggests that more rapes are occurring. She attributes the increase to this year's higher student enrollment and a raised awareness of knowing how and whom to report the crimes. She also said she believes that sexual assault is "grossly underreported on campus."

Amber watch

The Amber Watch is gaining favor among child safety advocates. The watch was designed to help kids escape immediate danger, regardless of whether that's an attempted abduction, animal attack or simply being lost in a crowd.

The alarm on these kid-styled accessories is easily activated by pushing two small buttons on its side, and deactivated in the same way. But a skeptic's caution: The watch should come with an even-headed, parent-to-kid face-to-face so that this portable ear-buster is used as it's intended and not turned into a playground novelty.

The Amber Watch sells for $29.99 at Target. $1 from each one sold is donated to the AmberWatch Foundation.

Saying 'no' to menace

"No" is only a two-letter word, but its meaning holds great power.

Especially when it comes from the mouth of a confident child.

Learning when it's OK to say no and other forms of verbal defense is only a small part of Radkids, a personal empowerment safety education program for children.

Fighting, fit with karate!

It's neither hi-tech weapons nor security guards on which Kanpurites rely for their safety. Girls, oldies or physically challenged people seems like everyone in Kanpur is going in for karate classes to safeguard themselves as well as to stay fit.

Ask 23-year-old Mehar Gupta how she copes with safety hazards while returning home late after work in an unsafe city like Kanpur.

"A few weeks back, when I was returning home from office late in the evening some, unruly elements stopped me and tried to misbehave with me. But within seconds, I taught them a lesson through my karate skills!"

Bullying

Here are 12 ways to stop or hinder bullying.
And you know what - it works! Kids really need to know how to defend themselves, but not necessarily in the physical sense. It can include trickery, deflection, defusion and other methods of conflict management.

Story:
Pete Nappier was bullied when he was a young kid. It was part of his inspiration to start the Safety and Awareness Institute in Hickory and Lincolnton.

Nappier teaches kids, from elementary to high school, 12 ways to deal with bullies.

"The program hits every aspect," Nappier said. "The bully only wants power. So we teach to give the bully respect. It's a pretty in-depth curriculum."

Across the county, schools say they see an increase in such problems.

Cane-do

At 91, North Logan resident Carmen Boss diligently exercises her mind and body. Although she could probably outrun many men and women decades her junior, Boss recently decided to use a cane.

"We'll all have a cane in the morning," the northern Utah woman said after attending Combat Cane - a senior-citizen safety class.

Car safety

More than once I can't help but wonder where some people have their brains. Like this quote from a seminar in Scotland about car safety: Driving And Self-Defence.

"The most simple, and effective, tip is something I had never thought of, which is always to lock your car door when driving under 20mph. AcciDON'T estimates that more than 90% of car-jackings and smash-and-grabs can be avoided in this way."

Boy, of boy, where is one to begin...
Never thought of locking your car door...

I think I better go to sleep and let that one sink in!

More work-related violence

Threats and violence against social service workers is nothing new, but it rarely rises into the headlines until someone gets killed.

A study released last week by the National Association of Social Workers found that 55 percent of 5,000 licensed social workers surveyed said they faced safety issues on the job. Sixty-eight percent of them said their employers had not adequately addressed their concerns. A survey in 2002 of 800 workers found 19 percent had been victims of violence and 63 percent had been threatened.

Texas social worker Holly Jones stressed that "We don't have weapons, we don't have training in self-defense, we didn't go through a police academy and we're dealing with the same people they are."

Pink ladies from UK

Pink Ladies is the UK's first women-only private car hire franchise - geared towards women who feel safer taking a taxi driven by a woman.

Booking is done over the phone, and a text message is sent to the customer to let her know the vehicle is approaching, which means she doesn't have to wait outside.

Drivers are trained in self-defense and will wait outside a customer's home after a drop-off to ensure she gets in.
