Door-to-door dangers

During a period of eight months houstonpress.com have investigated door-to-door magazine sales across the country.

They say the industry has seen at least three murders and one attempted murder; one stabbing, one rape and two attempted rapes; one vehicle fatality and one attempted abduction of a 13-year-old girl.

My suggestion is that you take the time to read this article in full, it's shocking to say the least.

I strongly urge you to read this article. It's graphic and disturbing, but it leaves a lasting impression about this young woman's courage. What a will to survive!

Your typical bouncer?

Probably far from it - this guy seems to be one really mean and depraved individual.

According to guardian.co.uk, the 39-year-old is on trial, accused of murdering two women (19 and 22 years old). Both reportedly died after being struck with a blunt instrument. The man is also on trial for two attempted murders and one count of kidnap and false imprisonment.

According to the paper he has previous court appearances dating back to when he was 13. He had admitted offences ranging from vehicle theft, having an offensive weapon to assaulting a police officer.

He was jailed for a total of 13 months in 1991 for hitting a constable in the face, common assault on a special constable and failing to surrender.

In February 2005, he was jailed for eight months and banned from driving for seven years for dangerous driving after being stopped on a motorway hard shoulder at 70mph.

And this guy was working as a bouncer (doorman)...

Now, you may all say that most bouncers are not like this person here, and fortunately you're right. However, and this is my point, there are too many in that line of work who pose a real danger to those around them.

How do I know - I used to work the doors myself. It used to be worse, but there are still too many young guys out there with far too much testosterone, short fuses, little or no empathy, steroids, drug abuse, criminal connections and what have you not.

Norwegian psychologist Per Isdal describes in his book "Meningen Med Volden" ("The Purpose of Violence" - unfortunately available in Norwegian only as far as I know) amongst other things how one bouncer used his work to set people up for violence. A scary read; even more so if you knew that there are more guys like this out there.

One small piece of advice: Do not talk back at bouncers - it really does you no good at all. What it potentially can do is get you and others hurt.

And by all means - let us not forget that most of these folks are nice, hard working, under-paid and under a lot of stress. Be nice, boys and girls :-)

Knife rampage

This case shows a couple of things:
1. A small knife can do a lot of damage.
2. A knife is a dangerous weapon, regardless of size.
3. It's very hard to protect yourself against a knife attack - even if the attacker is drunk and with little or no skill with a knife. I will assume at least some of these 40 victims must have tried ...
4. A person in "party mode" (high spirit; occupied with friends, partners, thoughts or gadgets; probably under influence), is an easy prey.

Still kind of strange though that no one could stop a 16-year-old (allegedly) heavy drunk kid with a folding knife!

Story:
Berlin Prosecutors said Friday they have charged a student with 37 counts of attempted murder for a drunken knife rampage in the German capital.

The 17-year-old also faces charges of armed robbery and causing bodily harm, after allegedly attacking more than 40 revelers making their way home from the festive May 26 opening of Berlin's new train station.

The teenager was in pretrial custody, after officers arrested him, ending a 90-minute burst of random violence that created chaotic scenes as emergency workers struggled to reach victims among the crowds.

The accused, who was 16 at the time, used a folding knife to stab at a total of 37 people, Berlin state prosecutor Michael Grunwald said in a statement.

Of those, 31 suffered wounds to the upper body, two were wounded in the thigh. The knife failed to penetrate the clothing of three people, and one woman escaped injury because a pendant blocked the blade.

Eight people suffered life-threatening injuries to the stomach, lungs and kidneys.

Stalking

The effect of stalking/violence can be devastating.

Story:
UK -- Sam Marshall used to think of her immaculate home on a council estate in Bridlington as a safe haven that provided a loving environment for her three children. Today it feels like a prison.

Ms Marshall, 32, has become the victim of a stalker whose campaign of terror has left her afraid to step outside. Even within the confines of the property she loves, she is constantly reminded of an attack that almost killed her.

She was almost throttled on her back doorstep by a man who has been repeatedly sighted staring into the house over the back garden, and who hung a dead frog from her security light within days of the near fatal attack.

Crazy

Maybe adding up "martial arts fanatic" and "crazy" should have made a few alarm bells go off?

Story:
A Bronx woman was allegedly knifed by her rose-toting boyfriend. Jessica Guerrero says he tried to kill her because she rejected his marriage proposal - and he couldn't accept living without her.

Police said charges against Nieves are pending. A martial arts fanatic, he is expected to be arraigned next week.

"I knew he was crazy," said Guerrero's sister, Jennifer. "But I didn't think he was that crazy."
