Australia -- A 24-year-old Hornsby (Sydney) woman was threatened with a sexual assault while going to work at a nursing home Monday, according to smh.com.au.
A man reportedly approached her as she was walking along the street. The 22-year-old man - who was later arrested - started talking to her and she walked up a pathway, according to police.
The man then took out a knife, held it to the woman's throat from behind - threatening to kill her. However, the young woman pushed the attackers knife away, turned around and hit him with her bag. She then allegedly kicked him and ran away.

In shape
It is without a doubt of great help to be in shape -- both in a physical, as well as mental sense -- if you ever end up in a self-defense situation.
A case in point is this story about a 41-year-old woman from New York City. The intended victim was assaulted by a knife-wielding intruder in her basement apartment.
The woman says her furious, and successful, self-defense response, is due to the fact that she works out at the gym 7 days a week.
When she fought back, by screaming, pushing the intruder and then knocking him in the groin, the man went scurrying out.

Crying robber
This is just too funny...
A guy tries to rob a salesman - receives a fist by his intended victim, and takes off crying. Guess he went straight to his mum for comfort.
Story:
In Gloucester, a 32-year-old salesman punched a would-be robber trying to steal his laptop at around 2:30 p.m. on February 19, according to a police spokesperson.
The salesman was allegedly knocking on a door when the offender came up behind him and pushed him.
"The would-be robber then demanded he hand over his computer and mobile phone," the spokesperson said.
The intended victim punched the offender and he is reported to have run off empty-handed and crying.

'I-knee-do' #2
As you may know by now, 'I-knee-do' refers to the art of gently (kind of...) placing (sort of...) your knee where it's likely to hurt. This 'way of the harmonious knee' should only be used on folks who totally asks for it - kind of like they 'kneed it' (bad pun, I know) :-)
Story:
A 23-year-old Missouri woman was able to fight off a would-be-rapist in Kansas City by kneeing him in the groin, according to kansascity.com.
The woman said she was grabbed by a stranger about 9 p.m Thursday night and pushed into an alley.
The attacker reportedly pushed the young woman to the ground and fondled her. He also rubbed against her and attempteded to take off her shirt and pants.
After about 10 minutes og struggling with the man, she used her knee. The attacker then limped away and the woman could call police.

Quick thinking
"(...) very good and quick thinking on her part. This probably prevented her from further attacks," an Indianapolis, Indiana police spokesperson said, according to wishtv.com.
Police say the woman was attacked in a parking garage on one of the busiest streets in the downtown area. The incident occurred in the middle of the afternoon when a lot of people were leaving work.
The woman was allegedly entering her car when the suspect put his hand around her mouth and pushed her into the car, police say.
The intended victim pushed the "panic" button on her keychain. When the attacker heard the horn and saw the flashing lights, he took off running.

"My-key-do" #5
At 2:31 a.m. on Saturday, a police foot patrol responded to a call for an attempted sexual assault in Isla Vista, California, independent.com reports.
The woman told authorities she had met the suspect to buy cocaine from him, but when she arrived, he pushed her into a car and starting ripping her clothes.
Using her keys as a weapon between her fingers, she punched the man in the neck and was able to run away. The victim knows the suspect, because she had bought drugs from him before.

Huge Coldplay fan
Karaoke is a torture instrument the devil himself could be proud of. Consequently, I really can relate to the rage against the "singer" in this story, even though the actions are way over board.
Story:
Washington -- A woman attacked a karaoke singer belting out Coldplay on Thursday night, telling him he "sucked" before she pushed and punched him to get him to stop singing, bar staff said. The man was singing "Yellow" when it happened.
"It took three or four of us to hold her down," a bartender said.
When she was escorted outside, the 21-year-old woman "went crazy," the bartender said, throwing punches at him and others, including an off-duty police officer.
Patrol officers and detectives then arrived at the neighborhood bar and blocked off the street, which inflamed the woman's rage even more, a police report said. Before police could handcuff the woman, she headbutted the off-duty officer at least twice.

'My-key-do' #4
Oregon -- A 26-year-old woman was jogging at a community college outdoor track in Salem. Several other runners were at the track as well as the suspect.
The other runners left, leaving the woman and suspect. The man approached her from behind and pushed her to the ground.
The attacker attempted to pull the woman's clothing off, however, she had a set of keys in hand and began hitting the suspect with the keys in his face. The man then released the woman and fled the area on foot.

Parents, role models ...
And still we wonder how some kids grow up to be violent ...
Story:
An irate Italian family beat up a principal because they were unhappy with the grades a young relative had received and with a ban on cellphones at school. Three male relatives, including the father and grandfather of the student, punched and pushed the principal at a middle school in Bari on Saturday, police said.
They were angered by grades on the latest report card and by a recent ban by the principal on cellphones at the school he has run for the past 22 years. The principal was taken to hospital and treated for mild bruising. Police escorted him back to the school.

A typical robbery
An arch typical robbery really ...
On your way home after a night out; a secluded area (a short-cut); two perpetrators; a weapon; being asked a question by the goons; trying to escape/fight back.
And: Do you think you would be able to see the knife? The answer would most probably be no, I'm afraid.
Story:
A 22-year-old man was walking home from a pub in Lea just after midnight on Tuesday when he was approached by two men.
As he cut through a ginnel (walkway) between two streets, the men asked him for "a light" and then for his mobile phone. When the man told them he did not have either, one of the men started feeling his pockets.
The victim pushed him away but was then punched in the stomach by one of the men. The two men ran away and the victim decided to chase them - but then realised his stomach was wet.
When he looked down there was a cut to his stomach which hospital staff said could have been made by a craft knife, police said.
The man was taken to the a hospital but his wounds were not considered serious and he was released at 3 a.m.

Being hit by the student is bad. Hitting back is plain stupid. Could this retaliation have been avoided with a little knowledge and training? Quite probably.
Another thing is that the teacher really should have seen the punch coming. The pushing is a tell tale sign of escalation - in other words: a major red flag. Even more so when this student has what they call a "record of behavior issues"
Story:
Louisiana -- An 18-year-old student finished a test Tuesday and then shoved it in the teacher's chest. The 10th-grade teacher told her to take it back and hand it to him nicely, officials said. She shoved it in his chest again, school officials said, so the teacher repeated his request.
District officials said that on the final time, though, she threw the test in his face and followed up with a punch. He hit her back, officials said.
The 20-year teaching veteran was suspended with pay, and the student has been suspended indefinitely. The student has a record of behavior issues, according to the school district.

UK -- A Scottish market researcher fought back after a terrifying assault when a convicted sex fiend invited her into his Leith home for an interview on November 7, 2006.
The woman called at the flat unaware that the 59-year-old man who lived there had served jail terms totalling 18 years for assaults and sex attacks.
The man allegedly pushed her on to a sofa, held a knife at her throat, put his hand over her nose and mouth and threatened to kill her.
The woman fought back, cutting her attacker's face, and managed to get the knife and told him to "back off". She told the court: "I had to fight for my life."

In one word: Respect. This gent is really something! Karate, kung-fu, who cares - this is just one tough dude.
Story ('Karate kick Buster, 100, floors gang'):
Britain's oldest worker told on Wednesday how he fought off a gang of would-be muggers – using kung fu. Buster Martin showed that, even at 100, he still knew how to handle himself when he was confronted by the teenagers after a night at the pub.
The World War II veteran scared his three attackers so much they fled empty-handed. Mr Martin, a car washer-cum-mechanic, said: 'They just came at me and pushed me against a wall and tried to take my money from me.
'Then they pushed me on the floor and I went mad. I was lashing out on the floor and then I stood up and was kicking them all.
'I pushed one and kung fu kicked the other one between the legs and he let out a scream. They ran off scared after I did that and I still had all my money.'

North Carolina -- A prisoner at the a Correctional Institute will face attempted rape charges after allegedly attacking a female guard and attempting to rape her in a bathroom at the prison on Sunday.
According to the Lillington Police Department, a female sergeant was working on paperwork in her office when the 40-year-old inmate entered the office. The door to the office automatically shut when he entered.
The sergeant was attempting to locate a clothes hanger for the inmate when he began pushing her into a bathroom. She fell to the floor with enough force to tear a bathroom toilet from its permanent mounting on the floor when she hit it with her neck.
Once he had her on the floor, the inmate was attempting to remove the woman's clothes with one hand while he tried to lock the bathroom door with the other.
The guard attempted to use her protective pepper spray to fend the attacker off, but was not successful. She also began screaming for help as she fought off her attacker.
Two prison employees told Lillington police they heard her screams and went to help. They went into the bathroom to find the inmate on top of the woman. They physically removed him and placed him in handcuffs.

Fighting dirty
A University of Florida graduate assistant who was walking toward campus Thursday morning fought off a man who knocked her to the ground and attacked her.
"I chose not to be a victim," said the 23-year-old woman. "I thought to myself, 'I'm not going to let this happen.'"
The woman struggled with the man, who had first asked her for money as she was walking at about 11 a.m., Gainesville Police said. The woman told the man she was sorry, she didn't have anything she could give him, and kept walking.
"He just sort of came up behind me and pushed me to the ground," she said. "I just kept kicking him. My hands were already in the dirt. I grabbed dirt and started throwing the dirt."
When the woman fought back, her attacker let her go and fled.

Not (really) assaulted
It's quite typical how many (if not most) teachers, social workers, nurses, doctors and others in similar professions tend to view some forms of verbal and physical harassment/violence as "nothing serious".
Each episode may not be that damaging, but we tend to forget two major things:
1. The sum of all the episodes may add up to be simply too much to handle.
2. If we accept the "lesser incidents", then we are opening the flood-gates for more serious situations.
This article is from 2002, but it shows what many teachers have to deal with on a daily basis. And this will continue as long as teachers are not allowed to use any form of force what-so-ever, plus being skilled in keeping control - visually, mentally, verbally, non-verbally, strategically and physically.
Story:
She has been kicked, bitten, scratched, pushed and hit - but the Doncaster primary school teacher does not consider she has been assaulted.
It is all part of the job nowadays, she says - "water off a duck's back".
Proposing the motion - which was passed unanimously - The teacher told delegates at the Association of Teachers and Lecturers conference that teachers' human rights were breached on a daily basis as they grew to accept verbal and physical attacks.

What time is it?
A common method this - to ask a potential victim for the time. It is a part of what is commonly referred to as an "interview", plus it's a good (from the culprit's point of view) method of distraction.
Story:
Michigan -- Pittsfield Township Police say they've identified a man accused of pushing a woman into her car and fondling her in the parking lot of a store a week ago.
The suspect, a 24-year-old township resident, was captured a few days later after at least two people called police to report his bizarre behavior near a bus stop. The callers said a man was acting odd and following women, police said.
A few days earlier, the 26-year-old woman said she was getting into her car at a store when a man approached, asked for the time, then pushed her into her car and groped her. She said she screamed and kicked him away.

California -- A 42-year-old registered sex offender was arrested Sunday after he allegedly exposed himself and tried to rape a female employee of a home furnishings store Saturday night, Petaluma police reported.
Police said three employees of Pier One Imports were cleaning the business after closing about 10 p.m. Saturday.
A female employee emerged from a women's restroom she was cleaning and found the man, a fellow employee, standing naked in front of the restroom door. The woman screamed and the man grabbed her and pushed her back into the restroom, according to police.
The third employee heard the screams and went to the restroom to check on the woman. The suspect then retreated to a men's restroom and got dressed.

"Don't hit me anymore!"
I have probably talked about this on a couple of occasions, simply because I find it kind of odd.
Women protecting their children can give any man a run for his money.
And yet, when it comes to protect "only" themselves, many find it hard to show the same sort of aggression and "killer instinct".
Anyhow, this story is a great example of the first point above.
Story:
Taiwanese mum Guo Ping Xi, 34, fought the intruder, though he was armed, as she wanted to protect her daughter who was sleeping. Yes, he was armed with a gun and a knife. But that didn't stop Madam Guo from fighting him.
When the 34-year-old intruder allegedly put the knife on her neck, instead of caving in, she used all her might to resist him, reported Apple Daily Taiwan.
She punched him and kicked him till he was pushed into a corner.
Soon after, she had the intruder reduced to a bloodied heap on the floor loudly begging: 'Please don't hit me anymore.'
Her husband called the police and Yang was arrested.
Despite being of average build - Madam Guo is just 1.60m tall and weighs 50kg - she found the strength to take on the much larger man. The suspect weighs 75kg and is 1.65m tall.
