Wrestled knife away

A 15-year-old girl stabbed and killed a man with his own knife last week in northern Moscow after he purportedly tried to rape her, investigators said.

Around 9 p.m. on a deserted platform at a commuter train station, the girl was apparently approached by a man who produced a knife. The man threatened to kill the girl if she screamed.

"It's my birthday, so you are going to make me happy," the man said, according to police sources.

The girl, who is a gymnast, kicked the man and ran, but she tripped moments later and was caught. The man snatched the girl's phone, and a scuffle ensued during which the girl wrestled the knife from the man and stabbed him in the back.

He could handle it

Well, I guess this guy should thank his older twin brothers for all the times he had to fight them both :-)
And it shows that it is vital in functional self-defense training to train also against more than one opponent.

Story:
Florida -- Getting carjacked, mugged or beaten up by total strangers at 11:00 in the morning outside a government building in Jacksonville isn't something most people worry about.

But it happened to a mortgage broker outside the Supervisor of Elections building, where his brother works.

"One guy got in the passenger side of the vehicle. He choked me in my truck. And the other one was trying to take my keys," the intended victim said.

He says he's got twin older brothers, and he's never fought them one on one. So when two came in for the attack at once, he says he could handle it.

False reports

This is such a cruel, egotistical, terrible thing to do.
First of all it shows a monumental lack of respect towards all those that are actual victims of sexual crimes.
Then it gives unneeded ammunition to those (few, but very vocal) who argue that "a large number of rape reports are false."
It also stir up fear, uncertainty and anger amongst other residents in the area of the bogus alert. Finally, it puts unnecessary loads of work on the police.

And for what? Because her boyfriend had forgotten their anniversary... I'm at loss for words.

I can understand that a young girl or a teen can make up a story to achieve something, like gaining sympathy, or covering up the fact that she's been out late. But from what I understand this is an adult. Again, I don't know what to say.

Story:
A woman who told police she was grabbed and dragged into the woods while walking in Lake Oswego Tuesday evening, sparking a widespread manhunt, actually made the whole story up, according to police who said she confessed Friday.

Her story changed after ongoing questioning from police who became suspicious when she refused to cooperate with investigators.

The woman allegedly filed a report of kidnapping and attempted rape because her boyfriend had forgotten their anniversary, police said.

On familiar grounds

This man was in the right place at the right time, which means another man was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The culprit was only out of jail for a couple of hours and must've missed it; police say the first thing he did after getting out of jail was steal from a store.

One of the store clerks went outside to confront him about stealing cigarettes. He turned around and punched her, and would've hit her again if not for a good Samaritan who knows something about self defense.

James Sjostrom immediately ran outside to help. The thief tried to punch him, but missed. In no time, Sjostrom had him down.

"I just grabbed him and threw him on the ground and sat on him and waited for the police to arrive. I was trained in the marines as a close combat instructor, so I'm pretty familiar with takedown techniques."

Mean bag

Florida --A 14-year-old girl told police that she used her book bag to hit and then escape from a man trying to pull her into his vehicle during an attempted abduction in Daytona Beach.

The girl said she was walking behind a Checker's restaurant when the man grabbed her, police said.

Police said the teen began beating her alleged abductor with her book bag and began hysterically screaming for help.

Surprised by the numbers

Surveys that showed almost 20 percent of female cadets at The Citadel said they had been sexually assaulted since enrolling surprised some of the military school's female grads.

The college this week released surveys taken last spring in which almost 20 percent of the female cadets and 4 percent of male cadets said they were sexually assaulted since enrolling. The news made headlines nationwide but the effect on recruiting women cadets is unclear.

Nancy Mace, the college's first female graduate, said the numbers were about on par with other colleges, but The Citadel is held to a higher standard "and that's the surprise here."

A real mystery

It's this sentence that gets me kind of curious: "Police are trying to figure out what prompted a man to attack a young woman early this morning (...)".
Does that mean they are contemplating if the guy was just trying to be friendly or something? Maybe they still haven't thought about sexual assault? Apart from robbery, what other options are there?

Story:
Police are trying to figure out what prompted a man to attack a young woman early this morning at her campus area apartment building.

The 20-year-old woman didn't see the man and safely entered her apartment building but, as she went up the stairs to her apartment, the man ran up behind her and punched her in the face several times.

The woman fought off her attacker, tearing his shirt, and he fled empty-handed.

He was "framed"

Noises from her neighbor's yard woke the 74-year old woman up just before 2 a.m. Sunday in Albuquerque. She told police she started to call 911 when she saw a man in her neighbor's backyard.

Before she could speak with the operator, the man was inside her house and had hit her over the head with a heavy object.

He then dragged her through a puddle of her own blood to another room, where he attempted to rape her. The man pushed the woman against a wall, according to the complaint.

A dispatched officer hollering his presence at the woman's home startled the man, and the woman took the moment to grab a picture frame from the wall and smash it over his head, according to the complaint.

Violent students

A teacher friend of mine says it is no wonder that a lot of his colleagues get into trouble.
In his opinion many of them - most of them female teachers unforunately - has no natural authority at all, and as such little or no control over the teaching environment.

Story:
Australia -- Teachers have been karate-kicked, punched, headbutted, sprayed with acid (!) and attacked with weapons in a disturbing range of assaults by violent students in NSW public schools.

There are more than 60 attacks on teachers in the past six months alone - including several in their own homes.

The growing threat to teacher safety has led to State Government plans for the most dangerous students to be sent home for tuition in addition to the option of placement in behaviour schools.

The crackdown on anti-teacher violence follows a 16-year-old student from Randwick Boys High School appearing in Bidura Children's Court for allegedly choking a female teacher on June 19.

Women can!

Raise your hand if you've ever heard a statement along these lines:
"A woman is not strong enough to defend herself against a man!"
You've heard that statement more than once? Have I? Over and over again, almost like a mantra.
And the saddest part, I hear it often from women too!

Ok, here's a reality check for you: Girls and women defend themselves against male aggressors with voice, trickery, ingenuity and physical ways all the time!

Can any woman defend against any man? Of course not. Just as little as any man can defend himself in any situation.

The point is that 'ordinary' women fight back against violence in many shapes and forms - and they very often succeed!
The key to here is the will or motivation (call it guts if you like) to survive.
Fighting against someone who's survival instinct has clicked in is darned hard - no matter what age or gender that person has!

Want a proof? How about 2100? This series: "I Hear You Say Woman Can't Defend Themselves" is just that - two thousand, one hundred instances of women who fought back.

Read more about it here and gain new insight!

She's a knock-out

I'm tempted to repeat a rather common phrase: Only in America...
Where else could someone sue for being "attacked" by a store mannequin, you know the type that are used for displaying clothes - yep the man-made, lifeless ones?

Weird as this story may be, it shows something that you should be aware of. I'm referring to the "shopping-like psychosis" that some - mostly women - enter when they are working on their black belts in shopping.

When I did loss prevention work it was quite scary to see how people could literally try to walk over or through you to get to the items they had set their hungry eyes on. Their only concern was to "shop till you drop", and consequently they got tunnel vision and no awareness what so ever about the surroundings.

Did pick-pockets and thieves have a field-day during the big sales? It was like stealing candy from a baby - credit cards, codes, cash and open bags just floating around. Not to mention all the kids that where running all over the place while mommy was doing a *little* shopping...

The best part: These people couldn't understand how someone could steal from them (oh no, not ME!). Some also got very aggressive when you pointed out to them that their wallet was lying unattended or their precious child was about to exit into the streets.

Story:
LA -- A woman is suing the J.C. Penney Co. after an alleged run-in with a store mannequin that she says left her with a cracked tooth, a bloodied head and recurring shoulder pain.

Diana Newton, 51, of Westminster sued the Texas-based retailer last month in Orange County Superior Court, claiming she was cracked in the head by a legless female dummy at its Westminster Mall store.

Newton said the incident happened nearly a year ago in the women's department, as she was shopping for a blouse. The only one in her size was on the mannequin. As a salesclerk was removing the garment, the dummy's arm flew off and struck Newton's head, according to her lawsuit.

It was odd

Here's a great example of not trusting your instincts. Luckily the woman managed to get out of the dangerous situation unharmed.
Think about it: Why would someone park close to your car in a garage, when there are lots of vacant slots?
And asking for light, direction, a cigarette etc. is very often a part of what we call an "interview". The fact that the perpetrator "seemed pleasant", should also be considered a danger sign - it's a set up, for crying out loud!

Story:
A Maitland office worker's quick thinking helped her foil a kidnapping Wednesday morning even though she had been choked unconscious and dragged into her abductor's car.

"She's darn lucky to be alive," a Maitland police officer said.

The woman had parked in a multistory garage and was reading a newspaper about 7:20 a.m. when a young man asked her to light his cigarette, police said.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, told detectives she thought it was odd that the man had parked close to her car with so many other vacant spaces, but that he seemed pleasant.

Using MySpace

Finally (?) something worthwhile coming out of the site other than showing off your eight-hundred-and-twenty-two "friends"...

Story:
New Hampshire -- A 14-year-old girl was walking at a Manchester park over the weekend when she was attacked by nine girls, the report said. One of the girls grabbed her by the hair, turned her and punched her in the face. The attackers fled the scene with the teenager's cell phone and purse.

A friend of the girl said that one of her attackers may have a MySpace profile, so the mother went online with her daughter in hopes of tracking down the girls.

"As soon as we plugged it in one girl, all the girls showed up as best friends," the mother said. "They had pictures of themselves -- everything. They put it right out there."

The woman printed out the photos and names of the girls and contacted the police.

'Shoe-Fu'

Hopefully this 'shoed' teach him a lesson!

Story:
UK -- A girl fought off an attacker after she was grabbed in the street in broad daylight.

The 15-year-old was walking in Cambridge, when she was grabbed by a man smelling of alcohol. The suspect was between 21 and 40, around 5ft 8in, and of athletic build.

The teenager managed to escape from his clutches, hitting him in the head with her shoe before breaking free.

Desperate action

This incident shows a couple of things, apart from the outright stupidity and mindlessness of some middle-aged men.
First it shows that it is quite possible to defend against a strangle-hold with one of your own, especially if you know how, and/or uses some item to apply the hold with.
It also proves (again) the amount of strength, ingenuity and willpower that a person can apply when the survival instinct kicks in.
Brave girl!

Story:
New Hampshire -- "When people find you, you will be decomposing."

That was the threat that the 17-year-old girl told police spurred her into desperate action; she decided she had to strangle her assailant before he strangled her.

As he choked her in the front seat of his pickup truck on a back road in Auburn, she managed to grab an orange cord and wrap it around his neck, tightening it until the 45-year-old Manchester man gasped for air and she heard a gurgling sound.

According to court records, after she released the cord the man sliced his wrist with a box cutter and then began begging the girl not to go to police.

He had enough

There are some really strange individuals out there, that's for sure.

Story:
According to a report, 42-year-old James T. Hill of Shreveport, was walking when he was approached by two men.

But what struck Hill as most noteworthy, the report indicated, were the men's accessories: several handguns for the first robber, and one nickel-plated gun held by the second.

According to reports, Hill said he was approached by the men, who demanded his wallet at gunpoint. As he left after being robbed, the robbers ran after him, and he apparently had enough, the report said.

Hill told investigators he "commenced a martial arts kick" and knocked the gun out of one of the robbers' hands and started wrestling with his attackers.

According to the report, an unidentified man then left a nearby house, armed with a shotgun and threatened to shoot Hill. Hill fled on foot and went to a nearby convenience store to purchase a beer, reports continued, but the store was closed.

It's a gas

For sure, you use anything and everything at your disposal - if and when you decide to fight back.

Story:
North Carolina -- A robbery victim in Charlotte fought back against his attacker by spraying him with gasoline.

Officials said the alleged robber approached the man at a Shell Station around midnight.

Eyewitness News was told the victim sprayed the alleged robber with gasoline. The victim was then shot in the arm.

Officers arrested the suspect at the scene. The victim went to the hospital.

'Bats and bells'

Don't these guys ever learn never to mess with an angry mum?
And I mean, why use a dumbbell? I suppose the dumb part of the word says it all.

A. Go to the gym - pick up a dumbbell
B. Go to pick a fight
C. Get chased away by the mother
D. Go back to the gym

What will he use next time? A set? Larger dumbbells? Maybe the whole rack? No wait, go get the whole gym! That should carry some weight...

Story:
California -- A man armed with a dumbbell attempted to assault a Greenfield man in his home, according to Sheriff's deputies. He was beaten away by a woman with a baseball bat, deputies reported.

The incident allegedly took place late Wednesday afternoon in Greenfield.

Deputies said a 27-year-old man entered the house with the intention of fighting a man, but the would-be victim's mother used the bat to stave off the attack.

Live on TV

If nothing else this bizarre incident shows that caution and self-restraint is required when discussing certain topics.
Many fights (if not to say wars) have broken out over topics such as religion and politics. The mixture of alcohol and a hot topic is a sure-fire way to have a quarrel...

Story:
A public access show in Tampa nearly turned into a boxing event when a heated debate got ugly.

Internet talk show host Tony Katz walked off the set of his political debate show after exchanging angry words with Hillsborough Commissioner candidate Joe Redner.

The two had been discussing Israel but the debate turned personal when Katz called Redner a liar. Redner called him fat.

Seconds later Katz threw a chair. All of it happened on live television.

Step on it

This woman used a great escape tactic.
That said, it is time to start thinking when you notice you're being followed.

Story:
Texas -- There have been 26 carjackings in Dallas since August 1, according to reports. Two of those attempts came less than a week apart in a quiet Northwest Dallas neighborhood.

On Tuesday, as one young mother approached an intersection, she noticed a metallic-colored sedan closely following her.

"I didn't know what to think, and I knew that my child was in the back seat asleep," the woman said.

Suddenly, the car cut her off at a stop sign, and the passenger jumped out with a bandana over his face.

"He pointed the gun right at my window, and pulled on the handle of my door, and ordered me out of the car," she said. "At that point, I just looked straight ahead and put my foot on the gas and hightailed it down the street."

Fork off!

A great example of using whatever is at hand to fight back.
It also shows that any weapon can be taken away from you. This goes for the perpetrator as well as the victim! In another recent attempted rape case from Colorado, the intended victim took the knife away from the attacker and fought back.

Story:
A South Peoria man was arrested Monday for allegedly trying to rape a 17-year-old girl, then firing a gun at her as she ran away from his house.

About 11 p.m. Sunday he lured the victim into his home, promising her that her girlfriend was inside. He then allegedly pushed her down, pulled off her pants and underwear, and tried to have sex with her. There was no penetration.

As the victim fought the man off, she grabbed a fork laying nearby and stabbed him repeatedly in the neck, police said. He then grabbed the fork from her and stabbed her in the right hand.

The girl was able to free herself from the man when he left to get his gun. As she ran down the alley, the assailant fired at her six times.

The girl "heard bullets go past her head," police said. She was not seriously injured and declined medical treatment.

The suspect was taken to a medical center for treatment of the fork wounds and later arrested there by police.

Dating service attack

Kentucky -- Lexington police continue to search for a man they say tried to rape a woman at a Lexington business. The victim had to be taken to the hospital after the terrifying ordeal.

Police say it's not the first time the dating service where the attack happened filed a harassment complaint, in fact one was filed just last week. However, police aren't saying if it's connected to what happened Tuesday.

Police say a man entered the business Tuesday morning. He was chatting with the female employee when the conversation quickly turned inappropriate.

Police say the woman was grabbed by the man and taken to a back room where he attempted to sexually assault her. Police say she fought back, but was hit in the head by the suspect.

Anger release bar

Strange stuff!
Does 'punch at' imply some sort of near hit or maybe maximum force allowed?
What if someone comes in who is capable of delivering a serious belting...
I wonder if insurance will cover that?
Or do they have waivers, stating you're working at your own risk?

Story:
Stressed-out Chinese can now unleash pent-up anger at a bar that lets customers attack staff, smash glasses and generally make a ruckus, a Chinese newspaper reported Monday.

The Rising Sun Anger Release Bar in Nanjing, capital of the eastern province of Jiangsu, employs 20 muscled young men as "models" for customers to punch and scream at.

The owners said that since he opened the bar in April, most of the patrons have been women, especially those working in karaoke bars and massage parlors.

Overkill?

I can understand his pain...
I mean, if someone eats my yummy chocolate cake, I would be rather grumpy too.
But then again, maybe - just maybe - violence is going a bit to far?

Story:
"Father's Cake Rage," the headline screamed. Apparently, 37-year-old Obnoxious Bozo (not his real name) flew into a rage because --get this -- someone ate his chocolate cake!!

So what does Mr.O. Bozo do? Ordinary people like you and I would probably rant, sulk, moan and then pop in a piece of cheese or chew a leaf off the potted plant to get rid of the craving for a sweet.

Not our macho man though. He went into a rage and then hit his partner with a hammer and threatened his children with a snooker cue….because someone had eaten his slice of chocolate cake.

He does not stop there, oh no. Bursting with understandable anger, Mr. Macho Man then repeatedly stabbed a carving knife into the bedroom door of one of his children.

He threatened to kill his wife and children and then kill himself. All because a slice of chocolate cake had gone missing! I tell you what, that wife and children of his would never dare to even look at a chocolate cake for the rest of their lives.

Nunchaku challenge

"You look at my wife, I get to beat you up!"
Fair enough?
Well, I thought that part of an officer's job actually was to look at people...

Story:
Iowa -- A man was charged after police say he threatened a detective with nunchuks in Davenport. The 26-year-old male was charged with assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and public intoxication.

The detective was monitoring an area where officers were looking for a robbery suspect early Wednesday morning when the suspect approached him and accused the detective of "looking at his wife," court documents said.

The man then challenged the detective to a fight and pulled out nunchuks, police records show.

Don't bring a knife

...to a gun fight!
That's a pretty obvious observation, right?

Not for this guy who went into a gun shop in Auckland, New Zealand, with robbery in mind. Alas, he had armed himself only with a machete. According to reports he was immediately shot.

Three assault cases

Canada -- The 23-year-old was one of three women attacked during the weekend in places where woman should feel safe: the quiet residential street of carefully tended gardens; an apartment stairwell; and a telephone booth at a major intersection in Scarborough.

In all three cases, the women punched, scratched, kicked and screamed until their attackers fled.

Old dog, iron rod

Do I love stories like this? You bet!
The moral of today's lesson: Don't mess with people - not everyone is as fragile as it may seem!

A 60-year-old Norwegian ex-boxer name Aage Piltingsrud gave three young punks a lesson for life on Saturday.

After a trip to the local pub in Hoenefoss he was on his way home at around 5:30 p.m., walking to the nearest bus-stop.

Before he reached the bus-stop he was approached by a young man who walked by his side. The punk was in company with two other young males. Suddenly the youngster started to hit Mr. Piltingsrud with an iron rod.

The ex-boxer simply gave the assailant the beating of a life time - at the same time scaring the other two youngsters away.

According to Mr. Piltingsrud he gave the attacker "a hell of a beating", knocking him out cold.

After the battle, our hero had some minor injuries to his head. Rather than going to the hospital, he went home and washed the blood off.

Personally I'd like to shake his hand and thank him. I just hope the punk got all his teeth knocked out. I would also urge him and his cowardly friends to do us all a favor - disappear, will you? Preferably for good.

At least two underwears

For 20-year-old Maryjoy Galendes, the fierce armed conflict in Lebanon was a blessing in disguise.

While admitting that the war was a very terrifying experience, Galendes said she was thankful that it erupted because it gave her a chance to escape the maltreatment of her Lebanese employer.

Zaida Laud, 26, vowed not to go back to Lebanon after she was almost raped by the son of her employer.

Galendes and Laud were among the over 200 OFWs evacuated from war-torn Lebanon.

Many of the returning Filipina workers said they experienced different forms of abuses. Wearing multiple underwear, they said, is a common practice among them.

"We wore at least two underwears as a protection from possible rape," they explained.

Unlike Galendes, Laud said she was lucky to have a very good employer. But it was the son who wasn’t.

"My employer was good to me but I do not want to go back there because the 17-year-old son of my employer tried to rape me but I fought and was able to escape," she revealed.
