These two robbers are not exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer :-)
The two Gainsville, Florida men used a cell phone to imitate a gun in order to rob two women of their iPhone in two separate incidents.
They used a car registered to one of the men - and one of the victims was able to give police the license tag number, according to gainesville.com.
When arrested, one of the men told police the robberies "were a joke" and that they were taped to put on YouTube.com. Police reportedly found no video of the "joke" robberies.
One of the robbers also said he was going to return the women's phones by calling them, according to a police spokesman. "At which point, our detectives reminded him that he stole their phones, so he really couldn't call them," the spokesman said.

A very cautious girl
"I'm a very cautious girl," this assault victim says. If that's the case, then it scares me to even think what being less cautious implies.
I mean, having your head down, and listening to your voicemail outside a nightspot at closing time... Oh yes, very cautious indeed!
Story:
In Springfield, Missouri, police are investigating a spate of downtown attacks on a women, according to ky3.com .
The latest assault occurred on Saturday, April 26. According to reports, there have been at least five reports of attacks in or near downtown since the beginning of 2008. The victims have been women in all but one incident.
The woman who reported the latest attack said it happened on a sidewalk. She had just stepped outside the nightclub just around closing time.
In three similar incidents, the victims said they were outside downtown nightclubs right after closing times.
"I never would have thought it could happen in just a little couple seconds that that took to happen," the Saturday assault victim said in an interview.
"I'm a very cautious girl; all my friends are," she said. But that wasn't enough to keep her out of danger. "I did have my head down listening to my voicemail and next thing led to another and I turned around and there he was," she said.
The woman says she just left the nightclub as it was closing down. She came around a corner to listen to her voicemail. She was alone and that's when she says the attacker pinned her hands above her head with one of his hands, then used his other hand to assault her.
The woman says she screamed for help and a stranger from across the street ran over to help. When he did, the attacker ran off.
Other victims haven't been as fortunate according to reports. Three similar incidents reported to police have much in common. They were all after closing, all outside downtown bars, all reported rapes and all listed a popular nightspot as a place where victims had been earlier in the evening.

More 'kung-shoe'
New York -- A sexual assault occurred early Sunday in a downtown parking garage in Albany, according to dailygazette.com.
At around 3:10 a.m., a 22-year-old woman left a bar downtown and walked to the garage. On her way, she noticed a man following her on the street, according to a police spokesman.
This man then followed her as she walked up the exit ramp to the parking garage. The woman attempted to call police on her cell phone but the man grabbed her phone, threw it to the ground and then tried to get a hold of the woman.
The woman managed to break away and got into her car, the spokesman said, but the man also forced his way into the car, where he got on top of her. The woman continued to fight the attacker inside the vehicle before both reportedly fell out the passenger side and onto the ground.
The determined woman then began to hit the man in the face and eyes with the heel of her dress shoe. She was finally able to get away from the perpetrator.
The woman was later taken to a medical center, where she was treated and released.

Crying robber
This is just too funny...
A guy tries to rob a salesman - receives a fist by his intended victim, and takes off crying. Guess he went straight to his mum for comfort.
Story:
In Gloucester, a 32-year-old salesman punched a would-be robber trying to steal his laptop at around 2:30 p.m. on February 19, according to a police spokesperson.
The salesman was allegedly knocking on a door when the offender came up behind him and pushed him.
"The would-be robber then demanded he hand over his computer and mobile phone," the spokesperson said.
The intended victim punched the offender and he is reported to have run off empty-handed and crying.

On the phone...
I can't help but wonder if people are at all aware of how they may set themself up as a victim. And no, this is NOT the same as blaming the victim.
Story:
Maryland -- Nbc4.com reports about a 44-year-old woman who was walking and talking on a cell phone at about 11:30 p.m. in Montgomery Village on Sunday.
A man with a knife reportedly pulled her into a lower stairwell landing in an apartment building and raped her.
The attacker fled on foot after the woman fought back, police said. The attacker is allegedly "known slightly" by the victim.

No good Samaritans
This is bad.
Story:
From Stockton, Teeside, UK news.bbc.co.uk reports about a serious sexual assault on a 20-year-old woman. She was reportedly walking home in the early hours of Sunday when a man grabbed her.
And here's the sad part: According to police, cars passed almost within inches of the assault. A number of cars, particularly taxis, drove past as the woman was being attacked, a police spokesperson said.
"It took place in the middle of the road, but not a single person stopped. There were at least five cars that passed her as she was lying on the road while the attack was taking place," the spokesperson said.
The woman had just finished a mobile phone call when the man attacked her. Despite being punched repeatedly to the face, she fought back and was eventuallyable to flee. She was later treated at a local hospital for facial injuries.

Classic cases of distraction
In Iowa City (Iowa), police are searching for a predator (or perhaps more than one person), according to gazetteonline.com. Police say young women have been targeted in downtown neighborhoods for months.
There are reportedly more than 31 reported incidents over a period of 12 months. The cases have similarities in more ways than the description of the perpetrator - a college age, white male of average weight an height.
Victims are often distracted, talking on cellular phones or fumbling with keys.
The man sneaks up on his intended victims and flees when they resist. Police says he targets college-aged females walking alone in residential areas which are poorly lit at the time of the attack. His victims are nearly always wearing a skirt or dress at the time of the attack, according to police.
The perpetrator often may confront his intended victim for less than a minute before fleeing, police said.

Cell phone strike
Glad there are instances when a cell phone comes to good use! As we all know by now, it can be a major source of distraction.
Story:
Tennessee -- Authorities have charged a 52-year-old postal worker who apparently attempted to abduct a 15-year-old girl Monday night, November 12 at a store in Cordova.
The girl, who was alone, had just left the store about 6 p.m., when the man approached her from behind.
"He initially told her to, 'Come here,' when she refused. The victim turned away and started walking back toward the store. The suspect then grabbed her and tore her shirt," a police spokeswoman said.
"She did strike him with her cell phone. She was definitely trying to get away. She felt she was in danger. She did not know this person and so she escaped serious injuries."

Targeting
More cases about the hazards of not being aware of your surroundings.
northjersey.com reports:
A 25-year-old suspect in a series of rapes and attempted rapes that occurred in the city's East side has been arrested, Paterson police (New Jersey) said. The man targeted young, petite Latinas. Since November 2006, he attacked at least five victims between the ages of 16 and 34.
According to police he looked for women who were distracted with cell phones and iPods before sneaking up on them from behind. They say he grabbed his victims with a choke hold, dragging them to a yard or an alleyway and then whispered in their ear before assaulting them.
And here's another report from East Lancing, Michigan:
A young woman called police saying she was approached from behind and fondled on a street by the Eli Broad School for Business building just after 11 p.m. Tuesday. She fought back and got loose in order to run away.
Another student told police a man with a tried to pull her jogging pants off while she was walking the river trail late Sunday. She also fought back and ran away.
"Both of these individuals were alone at the time," a MSU police spokesperson said. Both women escaped without injuries, but don't know the attackers. Police warn the women attacked were distracted--one was just finished making a call, the other using an iPod.

Nutcracker nut-case
Canada -- A Windsor man was out walking when a man approached him and asked for a cigarette. The victim declined to give him a cigarette and the suspect then asked him for money.
When the victim declined to hand over money the suspect reached into his pocket and pulled out a shiny metal object that was later determined to be a nutcracker.
The victim fled on foot with the nutcracker-wielding would-be bandit in pursuit. The man managed to pull out his cell phone while running from the man and called 911 with details of what had happened. Officers responded and saw the suspect still chasing the victim. He was arrested without incident.

Stacking
Pay close attention kids...
Here you have a slick perpetrator who is using "stacking" - that is (in this context) using more than one means to distract and confuse his intended victim.
A. Asking for direction.
B. Talking on the phone (probably just pretending).
C. Extending the hand.
Story:
Texas -- Fort Worth police were searching for a man who punched a woman in a parking lot and drove away with her purse.
Police said the incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The 35-year-old woman was loading her vehicle when a man drove up and asked for directions, police said. The man had a cell phone against his ear the entire time he was talking with the woman.
When she sensed something was amiss and began to move away from the man, he stuck his hand out to her as if to shake hands and then hit her in the mouth. She fell and the man grabbed her purse before fleeing in his car.

Story:
Tokyo police have in custody a suspected rapist who stalked women walking alone at night while using their cellphones or listening to music players, sources said.
The 28-year-old man, a South Korean student living in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward, has admitted to police that he attacked several other women.
According to police, the man said he targeted women carrying plastic bags from convenience stores, thinking that they likely lived alone.
He also singled out women wearing headphones or talking or texting on their cellphones because they "tend not to notice that they are being followed," according to police.

And still we wonder how some kids grow up to be violent ...
Story:
An irate Italian family beat up a principal because they were unhappy with the grades a young relative had received and with a ban on cellphones at school. Three male relatives, including the father and grandfather of the student, punched and pushed the principal at a middle school in Bari on Saturday, police said.
They were angered by grades on the latest report card and by a recent ban by the principal on cellphones at the school he has run for the past 22 years. The principal was taken to hospital and treated for mild bruising. Police escorted him back to the school.

Mobile theft capital
UK -- A survey has revealed that Glasgow is the mobile phone theft capital of the British Isles.
With one in five cases involving phones being snatched from bags, almost a third of people living in the city have had their mobile stolen.
The study also shows phone thieves are most likely to strike in the evenings; the months April and August had the highest rates of phone theft in the city, and one in five admitted falling victim while on night out.

Illinois -- A 19-year-old Millikin University student fought off a would-be robber about 7:45 p.m. Friday.
The young woman told police she was walking from her apartment to a friend's apartment, Decatur police said.
"She was trying to text message a friend on her cell phone and wasn't paying a lot of attention to her surroundings," a police spokesman said. "A man came up behind her and grabbed her purse. She tried to run but the assailant grabbed the front of her shirt."
The woman punched her assailant in the upper body and ran back to her apartment where she called university security personnel. The would-be robber left empty-handed.

Hazards at work, 32
Story 1:
A 15-year-old girl punched her teacher 10 times in the face and chest Tuesday morning after the teacher tried to take her cell phone away, police and MPS officials said.
A stricter ban on cell phones went into effect last month in Milwaukee Public Schools after several students used their phones to call outsiders to participate in fights.
Police said the student at Fritsche Middle School's LEAP program was talking on the phone during class when the teacher, a 54-year-old female, tried to confiscate it.
She wound up with a "chipped tooth and pain and redness in the face," an MPS spokeswoman said.

Story 2:
Another Philadelphia schoolteacher has been the victim of a vicious attack by students.
Joseph Smith, a teacher at the Deburgos School in North Philadelphia, said on Thursday he was attacked by a 14-year-old girl.
"Our kids have no belief and respect, no respect. There's no respect for authority," Smith said.
He was attacked after he said a 14-year-old female student grabbed a classroom phone to make prank calls and refused to stop. Smith said the girl hit him with the telephone and then hit him again with a dictionary, before more students joined in on the attack.
The attack comes a week after a Germantown High School teacher had his neck broken allegedly by two students.
Another teacher told NBC 10 News that his jaw was broken by a student at West Philadelphia High School in November.
The beatings come as a new report on violence in Philadelphia schools is released.

Entering your car
Entering you house or your car is the moment you should be aware - unfortunately many are not. We are often preoccupied by things we are going to do, rather than what we are doing right there and then.
Criminals are aware of the fact, and may strike at that point.
Story:
Indiana -- Police on Wednesday night released a composite sketch of a male they believe raped, robbed and carjacked an Indianapolis woman this week and had received numerous tips after that release.
The woman told police that she had just returned to her car in a downtown parking garage after work Monday when a male approached her, told her he had a weapon and forced her to drive him to a bank. The attacker made her withdraw money and raped her before she escaped, police said.
Also Wednesday, police said they're checking similarities between Monday's rape and an unsolved rape of a teacher in 2006.
Police said the teacher had just entered her car to leave the Sycamore School in April when a male entered the vehicle, pulled out a gun and told her to drive.
The gunman forced the teacher to drive to a nearby neighborhood before sexually assaulting her in the car, police said. Then they drove to a bank, where he made her withdraw money from an automated teller machine, police said.
They then drove to a different school and raped her in the car, according to police. The gunman then left the teacher, taking the money, her driver's license and her cell phone.

Hi tech defense
Even though this report is from May 2006, it should still be well worth a read. Good use of technology, I'd say!
Japan -- A youngster used her cell phone to alert Kai police that a friend was being abducted, leading to the arrest of a kidnapping suspect.
The suspect allegedly tried to grab a 6-year-old girl Tuesday as she left the JR Shiozaki Station in Kai. The suspect fled on a motorbike after the girl set off a security alarm in her bag.
Her friend got a photo of the teenager and the license plate of his motorbike, as he sped away, information that enabled police to track the 16-year-old down.

See no evil ...
Denmark -- Following a second sexual assault in less than a week, Randers police are looking into the possibility of having a serial rapist at their hands.
Thursday evening around 8:30 p.m., a 25-year-old woman was violently assaulted.
The woman was out running when she was attacked. The perpetrator forced her to the ground, threatened her with a knife and attempted to tear her clothes off.
The terrified woman hit the attacker with her cellular phone. She then wrestled free and ran away from the man.
Since the method used and the description of the perpetrator in the two cases are very similar, police alleges it may be the same man responsible for both attacks.
