A "pizza the action"

Florida -- A Miramar pizza delivery driver was confronted by armed robbers, according to news.bbc.co.uk and the Florida Sun-Sentinel.

But the 40-year-old intended victim was armed with a weapon of his own ... a large pepperoni pizza.

Reportedly, he flung the hot item at the gunman, then turned hot on his heels and ran. The driver managed to make a safe getaway even though the attempted robbers fired at him as he fled.

I suppose it is perfectly OK to waste good food as long as it is for a worthy cause like this one?

More food fighting

Kansas -- A pizza delivery guy went to an address in Wichita shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday to deliver an order but he was told no one there had ordered a pizza.

As the delivery man returned to his car, a man with a metal rod approached him and demanded his wallet and the pizza.

The man began swinging the rod, but the delivery man fended him off. "He was able to defend himself with hot pizza," a police spokesman said.

The robber fled, but police traced the phone number used to order the pizza to a nearby home, where they said they found a 24-year-old man hiding in a closet and arrested him.

Hazards at work, 35

Denmark -- It was close to 4 a.m. in the morning in central Copenhagen, when a man attempted to rape a woman delivering newspapers.

The 24-year-old woman was halfway through her round when a man accosted her at a street corner and offered her money.

When the woman refused his offer, the man assaulted her. He punched her to the face several times and forced her to the ground.

The woman was screaming as the perpetrator managed to remove the her pants. Luckily, a witness was awakened by the noise. As the witness opened his windows to see what was going on, the perpetrator took off.

Hazards at work, 14

Pennsylvania -- Camden County authorities are asking for the public's help to find a man who robbed a pizza deliverywoman at knifepoint.

Police said the victim didn't lose her cash without a fight but said the robbery was a bold and well thought out plan.

The young pizza deliverywoman never imagined somebody would try to steal her well hard earned cash that she needs for bills and the holidays.

Police do not condone nor do they encourage it but she fought back, dragging her attacker to the ground, that is, until he pulled a knife.

Hazards at work, 10

From media reports it may seem that attacks on people delivering pizza is happening all the time.
I do wonder if these companies have put any protective strategies to work. Or do they figure that robberies and assaults are simply "occupational hazards"?

Story:
A Colorado Springs pizza delivery man was attacked from behind and robbed of all of his pizza. It happened in an apartment complex Friday.

Witnesses say that there were 6 or 7 people in their late teens or early twenties that had ordered pizza to an apartment address. Once the delivery man came, he was hit on the head from behind with a rock and the pizza was taken. The man was sent to the hospital and required 13 staples in his head. Police have made no arrests.

It happened Sunday morning at 29th Street and Van Buren Avenue in Ogden. That's when police say a man grabbed the boy and pulled him into some bushes.

However, officers say the boy stomped on the man's foot, which loosened his grip on the boy and allowed him to get away.

Delivery drivers "easy targets"

For the past 20 years, pizza delivery drivers have been beaten, robbed and even killed because of their job.

Pizza drivers are robbed or attacked for $25 or less while working a job that the Bureau of Labor Statistics ranks in the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America.

In 2005, there were seven reported robberies of pizza delivery drivers in Gainesville, but police said most robberies do not get reported.
