No good Samaritans
This is bad.
Story:
From Stockton, Teeside, UK news.bbc.co.uk reports about a serious sexual assault on a 20-year-old woman. She was reportedly walking home in the early hours of Sunday when a man grabbed her.
And here's the sad part: According to police, cars passed almost within inches of the assault. A number of cars, particularly taxis, drove past as the woman was being attacked, a police spokesperson said.
"It took place in the middle of the road, but not a single person stopped. There were at least five cars that passed her as she was lying on the road while the attack was taking place," the spokesperson said.
The woman had just finished a mobile phone call when the man attacked her. Despite being punched repeatedly to the face, she fought back and was eventuallyable to flee. She was later treated at a local hospital for facial injuries.

Shout!
New York -- A man yanked a 9-year-old girl off the street in Melville Thursday evening, drove her a quarter of a mile, then released her, Suffolk County police said.
Police said they weren’t sure why the man released the girl, but they surmised it was because the child was screaming loudly.
Her mother had taught the girl to make noise if she was in harm's way, and police said they believe this may have saved her.

Snatch and run
Snatch and run - almost sounds like a slogan: Thieves-R-Us.
Seriously, why does women A. keep all their important things - house keys, credit cards, ID, etc. - inside a purse, and B. leave the purse on the seat beside them? How about making it just a tiny bit harder for the criminals? Why not put the important items in the glove department, and leave a "decoy purse" on the seat?
Story:
Four women have become victims of snatch and run thefts in Istanbul following an attack on Republican People's Party deputy Zeynep Damla Gürel.
Thieves who take advantage of traffic jams that occur on the streets specifically target the lone female drivers of luxury vehicles. The assailants flee after breaking car windows, typically with a spark plug, and taking the victims' purses.

Hazards at work, 35
Denmark -- It was close to 4 a.m. in the morning in central Copenhagen, when a man attempted to rape a woman delivering newspapers.
The 24-year-old woman was halfway through her round when a man accosted her at a street corner and offered her money.
When the woman refused his offer, the man assaulted her. He punched her to the face several times and forced her to the ground.
The woman was screaming as the perpetrator managed to remove the her pants. Luckily, a witness was awakened by the noise. As the witness opened his windows to see what was going on, the perpetrator took off.

A hood-head
Found this at hollabacknyc blogspot (a great blog by the way!).
Stories like this really makes me ashamed to be a member of the male population. There really are some pathetic and ignorant individuals out there ...
Story:
Tonight around 10 p.m., on a train back to her apartment in Williamsburg, a hooded man seated next to my best friend, a 22 year old woman, whispered in her ear "I am going to follow you when you get up."
He did follow her, just a step behind, up the subway steps of her stop and out onto the street. With great clarity in a life-threatening moment, she stepped inside a bodega, while he stood outside, waiting for her, and was fortunate to find a couple who were willing to walk her the few steps from the market to her apartment door.
When they exited the bodega, the hooded man was still there, waiting for his (potential) victim. Unfortunately, it took the help of two people--a woman to make her feel safe, and a man to protect her-- to allow this woman to arrive home unharmed.
The most important part of this is that my friend is safe, but I feel such anger and rage that men like this, who derive such a false, disgusting sense of power from physically and sexually threatening women in public (or private), can make strong, smart, powerful women like my friend doubt their decision to live alone if they choose, to live free and independent lives, or to merely live at all. I am completely disgusted, and concerned for my friend.

Punks in pink
Pink light? Well, I guess anything should be tested!
Story:
UK -- Pink lighting may be introduced in public places in Lancashire in a bid to stop teenagers committing crime.
The lights are intended to create a calming atmosphere - but they also show up spots on the skin.
Insp John Ainsworth, bases in Lea, Preston, believes putting the lights in well-known trouble spots could lead to a drop in anti-social behaviour.

"Inexplicable instinct"
One of the first rules of self-defense: Always trust your instincts!
It goes without saying that taking a bogus cab/taxi is something that should be avoided at all costs. Even if a car looks like a taxi, does not guarantee it to be a legitimate taxi!
Source:
UK -- The incident happened when young student picked up what she thought was a cab at Lynn Bus Station at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 5.
She thought everything was OK but an inexplicable instinct warned her not to give the driver her full address.
The driver was initially friendly and chatty but after she handed over payment at her destination, he pulled off again and would not stop.
The quick-thinking 17-year-old leapt from the vehicle when the driver reduced his speed just a few streets from where she had originally asked to be dropped off.

It was a peach
Man, I love stories like these!
Story:
UK -- Three would-be muggers who targeted a pensioner fled empty-handed after their victim, an ex-Army and England boxer, punched one of them on the chin.
Former middleweight George Bayliss, 67, had just drawn his pension when the three men surrounded him and demanded he handed over his money.
"I just threw a left at him – it was a peach, a real cracker," said George.
"I was really angry. I worked hard for that money, I did my time – they're not having it. That was my attitude. If I go down, I go down fighting.
"I think really they were a bit shocked – they picked on the wrong person."
George was in town on Tuesday when he noticed a group of five men hanging around outside the post office in Cornhill.
Three of these men later approached him in St John's Street and demanded he hand over his pension. After he punched one of them, all three ran off.
George, who holds several Amateur Boxing Association titles, still trains and goes running. He has also learnt the martial art Tai Kwon Do and taught his three sons Mark, Ben and Wayne to box.

Good job!
UK -- A woman fought off a knife-wielding attacker using only a personal alarm and skills learnt on a self-defence course.
The 48-year-old Italian was confronted by a man with a knife in the backstreets of London.
She kept her head, and, whipping out the personal alarm given to her as part of the course, the deafening noise scared of her assailant, who left empty handed.
She said she had realised he was following her: "We had been taught to notice our surroundings on the course and I realised it was important to take control of the situation.

Private security on the rise
UK: Security companies said last night it was not just the famous who were taking on private patrols to guard their streets, and that within months the service would spread across the UK.
The companies have benefited from the fear-factor generated by high-profile attacks, such as the murder of City financier John Monckton in December 2004 in London's Chelsea. He and his wife were stabbed after opening the door to their attackers. The crime was witnessed by their daughter Isobel, aged nine.
