Hawaii -- In Honolulu, Honoluluadvertiser.com reported about a man using a chair to defend himself when another man assaulted him with a skateboard and attempted to rob him at knife point.
The 54-year-old intended victim was reportedly able to fend off the younger attacker by using his chair until witnesses intervened and police arrived.
A chair can be used in primarily three ways as a defence tool. First it is possible to use the chair as a whole to hit an aggressor.
Then, you may (sometimes) be able to break of parts of the chair -- one of the legs usually works best -- to use as a club.
Finally, you can use it to push, or "catch" the aggressor -- think of the legs as four "fangs". If you hold the chair with the four legs pointing away from you, it is possible to avoid being kicked, punched or stabbed. Also, the attacker can be pushed and held against a wall.
This last scenario has occurred at psychiatric hospital and other places as well.

No good Samaritans
This is bad.
Story:
From Stockton, Teeside, UK news.bbc.co.uk reports about a serious sexual assault on a 20-year-old woman. She was reportedly walking home in the early hours of Sunday when a man grabbed her.
And here's the sad part: According to police, cars passed almost within inches of the assault. A number of cars, particularly taxis, drove past as the woman was being attacked, a police spokesperson said.
"It took place in the middle of the road, but not a single person stopped. There were at least five cars that passed her as she was lying on the road while the attack was taking place," the spokesperson said.
The woman had just finished a mobile phone call when the man attacked her. Despite being punched repeatedly to the face, she fought back and was eventuallyable to flee. She was later treated at a local hospital for facial injuries.

A sagging thing
Just came across this newsbrief from November 2005 and thought I'd share it with you guys. After all this is something I have hoped to witness a long time. In fact I think I'd be willing to pay quite handsomely just to experience it once.
What? Someone falling flat on his face as a result of the most stupid dress code ever: sagging - that's what.
This is the dumbest way to dress, bar none - and I've probably witnessed them all and worn some pretty daft outfits myself :-)
Story:
In Ferndale, Michigan, a then 30-year-old man stole several DVDs from a store and then attempted to take off on a bicycle.
When officers soon after found him in an alley, he tried to get away by foot. The only problem was that that his baggy jeans kind of got in the way.
His sagging pants dropped and tripped him. Police said the thief kicked off his pants and shoes and jumped a fence into a backyard, where he was apprehended.

Just looking ...
Say this can't be so: "Several stunned witnesses watched as the woman screamed and battled back"! Oh, my ...
The paper is calling this woman "tough as nails", and I tend to agree. I wonder what we should call these onlookers ... "concerned citizens" maybe?
Story:
New York -- A woman fought off a would-be rapist who viciously attacked her on an East Harlem street in front of shocked onlookers, authorities said.
The woman, 37, was walking on a street at about 4 a.m. July 4, when a 28-year-old man allegedly grabbed her from behind and dragged her down to the ground.
During the struggle, the attacker shoved his hands under her shirt and pants and fondled her, prosecutors said.
Several stunned witnesses watched as the woman screamed and battled back. Finally, the perpetrator gave up and fled but was arrested nearby, cops said.

Scary attitudes
Arcane moral values and scary attitudes towards women are being presented in a recent report from a research group at the Norwegian Attorney General.
The report shows that several jury members in rape cases often times will question the moral character of the female victim - "nice girls don't act like this", seems to be a common allegation. Members of the jury will many times challenge the actions of the victim prior to the alleged rape.
On the other hand, the defendant may likely get sympathy from these jury members.
The people in this report had been jury members in six cases which had overturned a previous court sentence.
One may really begin to wonder the jury selection process ...

Hazards at work, 35
Denmark -- It was close to 4 a.m. in the morning in central Copenhagen, when a man attempted to rape a woman delivering newspapers.
The 24-year-old woman was halfway through her round when a man accosted her at a street corner and offered her money.
When the woman refused his offer, the man assaulted her. He punched her to the face several times and forced her to the ground.
The woman was screaming as the perpetrator managed to remove the her pants. Luckily, a witness was awakened by the noise. As the witness opened his windows to see what was going on, the perpetrator took off.

The second ordeal
In short: Read this story! It is about the need to come forward, and the - sometimes enormous - pressure that a victim/witness may face in a court of law.
Story:
A traumatised victim of a child-molesting teacher told last night of her second ordeal - helping bring him to justice.
The woman, now in her 40s, said giving evidence in court brought back the full horror of the abuse.
Fighting back tears, the woman told how her cross-examination by the defence barrister had left her feeling "isolated, violated and bullied".
She said: "The experience of being a witness, cross-examined in a very challenging and adversarial manner by the defending barrister, has had a significant impact on me. His attempts to discredit me and my occupation, has reopened old wounds and hurts."
During the trial, the defending barrister accused her of inventing the allegations because of an infatuation with him, and she broke down several times.

Come forward!
This case should prove the importance of helping police and the court system - not to mention other possible victims - to make a statement and witness.
It also points to one of the major flaws of the criminal justice system - things that make a common man such as I shake his head in disbelief.
Anyone can become intimidated and afraid of the consequences of coming forward, but still ... At times we simply have to take a stand and fight for what is right, no matter what the consequences may be.
Story:
UK -- Sheffield's top judge launched an extraordinary attack on the criminal justice system after he was forced to sentence a "potential killer" to less than two-and-a-half years in jail.
Judge Alan Goldsack QC, spoke out at Sheffield Crown Court as he sentenced the man - a street thug with 41 previous convictions - for beating and kicking a man unconscious.
The attack was captured on CCTV and witnessed by two police officers, but because the victim refused to make a statement prosecutors ruled there was only enough evidence to charge the accused with affray.
Had he been charged with 'GBH' (grievous bodily harm) the 19-year-old could have been jailed indefinitely for public protection.

An International day
Just a quick reminder: Today, November 25, is declared by the United Nations as the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.'
It could be interesting to note that the Taliban in Afghanistan may believe that they are passing a truly great gift to their woman. You see, they are discussing a change in one of their many strict laws and regulations.
At present, for a Taliban man to be found guilty of rape, the victim needs to have four male witnesses. Well, of course they have to be male, you can't trust a woman - we all know that ...
The wise, and heavily bearded leaders of the Taliban are talking back and forth if maybe - just maybe - one male witness is enough. As far as I know they haven't even begun to consider how many women would equal these male witnesses.
Boy, do we have a long way to go!
From thenews.com.pk: "When we talk about violence against women, the general notion is of physical violence, sexual or otherwise. But this is just one kind of violence that women all over the world are subjected to.
Violence takes different forms and dimensions. The psychological pressures that oppressive customs and traditions exert on women; lack of equal access to opportunities for self actualisation and economic independence; no control over reproductive choices etc. are all forms of violence that relegate that status of women second to that of men and restricts them from fulfilling their potential.
In fact all sorts of violence against women have their roots in the dynamics of gender relations that a society develops. And let's face it, gender relations have been historically unequal."

That's just brilliant
What an absolutely brilliant move from someone being tried on assault charges...
Story:
Olympia, Washington -- The gavel wasn't the only thing getting a pounding in a Washington state courtroom.
A judge declared a mistrial after she saw defendant Justin Jacobson sock his court-appointed lawyer. Jacobson was being tried on assault charges.
Witnesses say Jacobson backhanded his attorney without warning. Guards immediately subdued Jacobson. Judge Paula Casey declared a mistrial because the incident was witnessed by prospective jurors.
Lawyer W. Larry Jefferson says getting smacked by a client isn't something you expect. He's withdrawn from the case.

Domestic violence, Bangladesh
Figures like these really makes a painful read:
At least 3,043 women died in different incidents of domestic violence last year and of them, 1041 victims committed suicide, according to a report released by the Mass-line Media Centre (MMC) recently.
Repression and sexual harassment led most women to take their own lives while rape and abduction were identified as most common violations of child rights in 2005.
The women fell victim to repression and violence mainly because of dowry, conflicts in conjugal life and poverty, said the report.
During the one year period from January to December, a total of 54,954 women fell victim to different forms of rights violations.
The report said 875 women were raped during the period and 165 were killed after rape. And 275 rape incidents, the highest at divisional level, took place in Rajshahi.
Some 1235 women fell victim to repression over dowry. Of them, 505 victims were killed and 428 others injured. Rajshahi division witnessed the most such incidents.
The forms of repression include beating, stabbing, acid attack, burning and forced starvation, the report said.

"Batman" charged after all
Does the food make you overweight as well as aggressive?
Story:
The Tarrant County district attorney's office has charged a Cresson man accused of threatening a woman with a baseball bat at a Forest Hill McDonald's, reversing an earlier decision by the office.
"He not only walked toward her with the bat, but a witness describes him squaring off in what was considered a batting position and threatening her verbally."
When the man tripped, the woman got the bat away from him and struck him on the top of his head, the spokesman said.

Pepper-spray case continues
A trial is set for April 2007 for a Cadillac teen whose mother filed a lawsuit after the girl was pepper-sprayed by a city police officer at her school.
The female police officer approached her and put her hand on the girl's shoulder, prompting a confrontation, the details of which are disputed by the two sides.
City police reports stated witnesses said Henry swung at Gregg when she came up behind her and put her hand on her shoulder. Gregg then used pepper spray to subdue the girl.
