Arizona -- A 76-year-old man who was accused of forcing a maid to put her hand on his penis four times while the woman was cleaning his trailer home in Glendale, claimed 'Satan made him do it'. Yeah, right...
The victim reportedly said the old man made repeated sexual comments towards her while she was cleaning the trailer.
She said he tried to give her a hug, but then grabbed hold of her hand - forcing it on to his crotch instead.
And sure, why not blame Satan, or your penis, or alcohol, or "sex drive", or drugs, or your childhood, or your parents ... or the government. It can't be your own fault, now can it?

"Candy man"
California -- On Thanksgiving, a 49-year-old intoxicated man reportedly went uninvited to a neighbor's home in Sacramento. He then started waving a kitchen knife towards people gathered on the lawn, according to usatoday.com.
When the drunken intruder cut several peoples' clothing - one of them decided it was time to fight back. The man grabbed a two-foot-tall plastic candy cane lawn ornament to subdue the attacker until police arrived at the scene.
According to reports, the man with the knife was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. But here's a kicker: The guest who took up the candy cane was not arrested because it was determined by police he acted in self-defense.
Well, that was a surprise. I mean, he could have killed the poor knife-wielding dude with that horrible lawn ornament for crying out loud!

Illegal cabs again
Don't mind jumping into an illegal cab after a night out? What's the problem you say?
Well, let us use Oslo, my town in Norway as an example. Just in a couple of days there has been reported several instances of rape and other serious criminal activities involving illegal taxi drivers. One driver alone was recently accused of three sexual assaults against drunk, young female victims.
Then there's another case where a 41-year-old woman was raped and robbed. As if the sexual trauma is not enough, the travel insurance company have refused to pay the woman for the values she was robbed of.
Why? They claim the victim is to blame by getting into an illegal cab under the influence of alcohol.
Even if this may be a tough call, it points to the very real dangers of getting into one of these vehicles - if anything happens, you're basically on your own.

Lame excuses #3
Today, in our ongoing series "It wasn't me - it was Mr Pee," we have reached what is probably the number one sorry excuse of all time. Drum roll please ... yep, it's alcohol.
Thailand -- Pattaya Police Station investigated a case of attempted rape which occurred at an apartments building in North Pattaya in the early hours of Friday Morning.
A 34-year-old woman claimed a 25-year-old man had attempted to rape her 10 year old daughter. The suspect reportedly lives at the same apartment block.
The mother caught the suspect in the process of attempting to rape her young daughter as her 15 year old sister slept beside her.
The culprit claimed he was drunk and was not in control of his actions but did accept that he attempted to rape the young girl.

Another "tough" guy
This is just sad. And I bet he's got a good excuse since he was drunk. We all know we can't possibly control ourselves when we've had something to drink, so it wasn't his fault ... right?
Story:
Canada -- A 40-year-old man faces assault and possible hate-crime charges after attacking an elderly Asian man in broad daylight on a busy Vancouver bus.
The attack happened at about 1 p.m. Sunday, said police."The man, for some inexplicable reason, starts making racial slurs against the 87-year-old man, punches him in the face and runs off," a police source said.
The man, of medium build and smelling strongly of alcohol, jumped off the bus and ran into a nearby pub.

Violence, alcohol
UK -- Violent crime is on the rise across Scotland, according to new figures which reveal that hundreds more attacks were carried out last year. Binge-drinking and growing inequality has been blamed for the spike in violence, which saw 13,994 crimes - including murder, serious assault and robbery - recorded in 2006-7, 2.4 per cent more than the previous year's tally of 13,664.
Six of the country's eight police forces witnessed a rise in non-sexual crimes of violence, with Northern Constabulary seeing a one-third increase in reported attacks, from 481 to 640. Four other forces - Tayside, Central, Grampian and Lothian and Borders - saw violent crime increase by between 6 and 15 per cent, while Strathclyde witnessed a smaller increase of 0.5 per cent, from 8,439 to 8,481. Only Fife and Dumfries and Galloway saw a drop in the figures.
The rise ends a three-year decline in recorded violent crimes, sparking fears that Scotland could be witnessing the beginning of a new upward trend. Northern Constabulary said the increase was "partly due to the misuse of alcohol".
"This is a big problem not just in our area but across the country. We're seeing it linked to a vast number of assaults. It's clearly a big contributory factor," said a spokesman.
Doctors are reporting a small but steady increase in the number of assault victims attending accident and emergency departments - which some believe is a more accurate reflection of violence levels - and say alcohol abuse is an increasingly prevalent factor.

How low ...
How low is it possible to get?
Seems that new standards are being set all the time.
And yes, it is easy to criticize this woman for drinking, and placing herself in a vulnerable position.
Yet, think about it - how many can raise their hands and say "I have never done anything that could potentially put myself in danger." At least I know I have - many times.
Story:
Michigan -- Police received a call from a 61-year-old Ann Arbor woman who said she was beaten and raped in her home by a repair man she knew through a mutual friend, reports said. The woman said the 43-year-old man, whom she had known for several years, saw her and approached her in a grocery store. During their conversation she said she was sexually assaulted in early May and that police were investigating but had not made an arrest, reports said. At the end of that conversation he agreed to fix her air conditioner in the near future, she said.
As the victim prepared for bed after midnight, the man came over holding a brown paper bag with a bottle of tequila, reports said. She told police that he said he had a friend in the police department who was interested in the case and suggested they re-enact the incident for "vital" information. She agreed and they began drinking, as on the night of the previous assault. At one point they even rearranged furniture and placed stuffed animals in chairs to represent other people who were there that night, police reports said.
The victim told police she drank five shots of tequila and didn't remember how they ended up in her bedroom, where the man began ripping off her clothes. She said she fought him off and ran into an attached bathroom, but he ran through the doorway before she could close the door. He then forced her onto the bed and beat and choked her during the assault, reports said.

Perfect conflict management
This is quite simply an amazing example of practical de-escalation and conflict management. A little absurd, yes (with group hug and stuff ...).
Do yourself a favor, and read the whole story - it's actually both funny, weird and educational all at the same time :-)
Story:
Washington DC Police on Capitol Hill are baffled by an attempted robbery that began with a handgun put to the head of a teenager and ended in a group hug.
It started about midnight on June 16 when a group of friends was finishing a dinner of marinated steaks and jumbo shrimp on the back patio of a DC home. That's when a hooded man slid through an open gate and pointed a handgun at the head of a 14-year-old girl.
"Give me your money, or I'll start shooting," he said, according to D.C. police and witnesses.
Everyone froze, including the girl's parents. Then one guest spoke.
"We were just finishing dinner," Cristina "Cha Cha" Rowan, 43, told the man. "Why don't you have a glass of wine with us?"
The intruder had a sip of their Chateau Malescot St-Exupery and said, "Damn, that's good wine."

Community order and no jail for an assault like this?
Story:
A drunken man who beat up a taxi driver for kicking him out of his cab has walked free from court. He was given a 12-month community order.
The 21-year-old man punched the driver after being ordered out of his taxi because of his unruly behaviour, leaving the victim nervous about carrying out his work, particularly at night and when passengers had been drinking.
The driver said he picked up five customers at 11:10 p.m in Burnley. The defendant sat in the front passenger seat and persistently knocked the taxi out of gear and interfered with the victim's radio. He pulled on the handbrake of the vehicle, tore a sticker off the dashboard and threw cards into the back of the cab.
The driver stopped, told the group he did not want to take them any further because of the defendant's behaviour and told them to get out.
As the defendant left the taxi, he elbowed the driver and the driver walked around the front of the vehicle to try to close the door. The defendant was standing in the way and punched the driver around the left eye, making him fall backwards. Two of the other passengers then joined in and the victim was again floored and thought he was briefly knocked unconscious.

Homeless
Unusual? Just because attacks on prostitutes and homeless people don't get reported to authorities, doesn't make them unusual.
Story:
California -- A homeless woman fought off a would-be rapist in Mountain View this week, an attack police described as unusual.
The attack happened about 3:30 a.m. Monday. The woman, sleeping in bushes, began to scream for help when a man tried to pull off her sleeping bag.
The assailant began strangling the woman and sexually assaulted her before fleeing. Her screams alerted someone in the neighborhood, who in turn called police.
Some formerly homeless local residents say sexual assaults on homeless women are pervasive but simply never reported to the police.
"For women out there, there's always people coming on to them, all the time," said an outreach worker.
A former homeless woman in Palo Alto, said women living on the streets frequently have to fight off unwanted advances. Men approached her regularly, she said.
Reportedly, the most dangerous time is the first week of each month, when some predators spend welfare and Social Security checks on drugs and alcohol.

Alcohol
I may enjoy a drink or two now and then - more and more seldom I might add. Still I have no problem seeing the potential dangers connected with alcohol consumption.
Story:
Guam -- Alcohol is the number one drug of choice among Guam's adolescents, and used by more young adults than any other illicit drug.
According to recent studies published in the medical journal, The Lancet, alcohol ranks among the five most dangerous drugs in our society. It has been ranked as being more dangerous than illegal drugs like marijuana or ecstasy.

Usually been drinking
You must be kidding; Consuming alcohol and walking alone through a secluded area at night "may increase the chances of being attacked". Wow, that is a huge surprise...
Story:
Edinburgh, Scotland -- Every week, according to police, one person is assaulted in the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links. The total number of (recorded) crimes in the area has soared from 68 in 2003-4 to 166 in 2006-7 according to police.
The majority of victims of serious assaults and hold-ups have usually been drinking, and they are white males aged between 21 and 25. They are mostly attacked by gangs of youths aged under 20 - many culprits in their mid teens.
"Pedestrians walking through the area at night after consuming alcohol may be increasing their chances of being attacked as they are less aware of their surroundings and therefore more vulnerable (...)"

Sweden -- Threats and violence against Uppsala ambulance personnel is far more widespread than what the official statistics show, according to unt.se.
In fact, violence is such a regular occurrence that many don't bother to press charges or even file reports, according to health personnel.
Patients starting to fight during rescue operations, threats and violence from bystanders, drunken people interfering during the Weekends, and even assaults with axes and knives, are just some of the examples.

Attempted rapist killed
India -- The Delhi High Court today acquitted a 30-year-old woman sentenced to life for killing her molester, holding that her act amounted to self-defence and not murder.
It was held that Simmi, a resident of Daryaganj was only trying to protect herself and did not "intend" to murder her assailant.
A Sessions Court had in September 21, 2006 sentenced Simmi to life imprisonment on finding her guilty of bludgeoning her atacker, identified as a vagabond, to death with a heavy stone in the early hours of April 22, 2004.
In her appeal, Simmi, through her counsel, contended that Mastana had attempted to rape her under the influence of alcohol. She had "pushed him away" in self-defence and he had fallen on a stone, fatally injuring himself on the head.

Step outside!
If you're asked outside to "have a go", or being followed out as you try to escape - sadly, this is what happens way too often.
Please remember - extremely few people fight "fair"!
Story:
UK -- A 19-year-old footballer and karate coach is in a coma a week after being attacked in a Calderdale pub on Mad Friday. The student was punched once after a row with a drinker in the Albert pub.
Police believe he crumpled to the ground outside the bar and bashed his head while his attacker fled.
He was out with work mates but left the busy pub after falling out with another drinker, possibly over a spilt drink.
The man followed him and hit him in the head from behind. He has not regained consciousness since the attack, which left him with two serious head injuries and a collapsed lung.

Red flags
Here is a great article about "red flags", or danger signs that I like to call them.
It's a great read by an (obviously) experienced police officer.
Even though the examples may be a little off from a civilian point of view, the underlying principle is spot on - always observe and think; use your radar!
Now this may sound tiresome, but I can assure you it is not. It is simply a matter of getting used to having your head and your body at the same place and time. It's nothing fancy at all.
Remember that good self-defense and self preservation begins with awareness. This is not the same as walking around being scared or being "prepared for the worst". Awareness is using your senses and your mind in a relaxed manner. It takes a little exercise, that's all.
Some of the things that may lower your awareness:
Drugs and alcohol, being tired, running late, using headphones or talking on a phone, being upset or angry, being occupied with past or future issues, being caught in tourist traps, travelling, shopping, watching or listening to something that intrigues you - and so on.
