Quick thinking

"(...) very good and quick thinking on her part. This probably prevented her from further attacks," an Indianapolis, Indiana police spokesperson said, according to wishtv.com.

Police say the woman was attacked in a parking garage on one of the busiest streets in the downtown area. The incident occurred in the middle of the afternoon when a lot of people were leaving work.

The woman was allegedly entering her car when the suspect put his hand around her mouth and pushed her into the car, police say.

The intended victim pushed the "panic" button on her keychain. When the attacker heard the horn and saw the flashing lights, he took off running.

Classic cases of distraction

In Iowa City (Iowa), police are searching for a predator (or perhaps more than one person), according to gazetteonline.com. Police say young women have been targeted in downtown neighborhoods for months.

There are reportedly more than 31 reported incidents over a period of 12 months. The cases have similarities in more ways than the description of the perpetrator - a college age, white male of average weight an height.

Victims are often distracted, talking on cellular phones or fumbling with keys.

The man sneaks up on his intended victims and flees when they resist. Police says he targets college-aged females walking alone in residential areas which are poorly lit at the time of the attack. His victims are nearly always wearing a skirt or dress at the time of the attack, according to police.

The perpetrator often may confront his intended victim for less than a minute before fleeing, police said.

The weapons myth

Hop over to my Squidoo women's self defense lense and have a look at the latest article.
It's about things to think about if you consider utilising a weapon (such as kubotan, spray, keys, taser, knife or gun).
I'd love to get your feedback on this topic!

Whistle blower

New Jersey -- A 14-year-old suspect, who authorities are certain preyed upon women in North Hudson last year has been apprehended. The teenager is charged with the assault of a 22-year-old college student November 2006 in a Guttenberg back alley, as she was returning home after parking her car around 10 p.m.

The young perpetrator allegedly forced the college student into a back alley by putting his hand across her mouth, but she resisted, according to a report. The assailant then allegedly pushed the woman's head against the wall, but the woman continued to struggle.

The intended victim blew a whistle that she had attached to her key ring. Several men came to her defense and the assailant fled the scene. The woman was not severely hurt or sexually assaulted.

"Although the boy is only 14, he appeared to be much older," a police spokesman said.

A bargain

Negotiating with a robber? Sure, why not - as long as you're able to assess the dangers involved, it is absolutely possible at times.
It is of course far better to let a robber have your money without any resistance what so ever. After all, you still have the most important stuff - your life; plus your keys, vital papers, drivers licence, and bank cards.

Story:
Brooklyn, New York -- Two women were attacked at gunpoint in separate subway station incidents just days - and blocks - apart, police said.

One victim managed to bargain her assailant down, and the other held onto her belongings, but suffered a terrible beating.

On May 27, a thug with a silver semi-automatic gun robbed a woman leaving a G-train station at 11 p.m. She stepped off a Queens-bound train and was headed up the stairs, out of the station, when she was attacked.

The man in front of her suddenly wheeled around and pointed the shiny 9mm gun in her face. "Give me your purse," the man said. But the woman stalled, asking, "Can I just give you my wallet?"

When he agreed, she actually pulled out cash from her billfold and handed over the greenbacks - a total of $165.

"Now walk down the stairs," the robber instructed. She complied, turning and heading back down into the station.

Soon these things will have to be registered as offensive weapons, I guess :-)
Not much 'ai' (means 'harmony') here - more like ai-ai...
Suppose the new art then will be termed ai-aikeydo ("the key way to pain") :-)

Case 1:
After a street assault in January, a 22-year-old New Zealander was rushed to Wellington Hospital to have surgeons remove his car key, which was embedded behind his right ear.

Case 2:
Illinois -- Authorities are awaiting autopsy results to confirm whether a 24-year-old southwest side man was stabbed to death with a house key, Chicago police said. The man was pronounced dead early Sunday in Oak Lawn after he was stabbed in the back of the neck during a fight at his family's home.

Case 3:
Australia -- A 12-year-old boy from Sinnamon Park was able to escape an attempted abduction May 22 by lashing out at the man's face with his house keys and jumping from the car he had been dragged into.

Your car or house keys can be great makeshift weapons.

Story:
Israel -- The Haifa District Court on Wednesday sentenced a Kiryat Motzkin man to 10 years in jail for raping a 26-year-old woman he met on the Internet.

The 26-year-old man was also convicted of attempting to rape a 17-year-old girl he also met on the Internet.

Three days after raping the 26-year-old woman, the man attempted to rape a 17-year-old girl he met through the ICQ online chat service. The two met in the Haifa area, where the man led his victim into a secluded alley and attempted to rape her.

The girl struggled with the assailant, and managed to escape after stabbing him in the face with a key.

Wal-Mart(ial) arts

Here's another report from a Wal-Mart parking lot in Murfreesboro, Tennessee (may seem like rather high-risk places...).
There are two contrasting sides to this incident.
First: The intended victim managed to keep her head cool, tricking her attacker to settle for her purse.
On the other side it is so typical (for women) to have everything but the kitchen sink in their purse. Not a big deal until someone gets hold of said purse.
The robber here now has (potentially) access to three homes, as well as credit information about the woman!

Story:
Tennessee -- A woman escaped an attempted kidnapping by a knife-wielding man Tuesday night when she offered her purse to the unknown suspect, Murfreesboro Police reported.

The 22-year-old woman was loading groceries into her car in a Wal-Mart parking lot at about 10:28 p.m. when the robber stuck a knife to her rib cage.

"He said, 'Don't scream. Get in the truck,'" the woman said. "He was trying to get me to get into the truck.

He wasn't after my purse. I was trying my best not to let him see that he scared the p... out of me. I tried to stay calm."

The victim told the robber that she had a purse with a lot of money in it, and the man took it and ran.

The purse held $26 in cash; a Bank of America ATM card; two Bank of America blank starter checks; a Tennessee Credit Union credit card; a driver's license; and keys to the victim's home and car, her mother's home and her boyfriend's apartment.

He could handle it

Well, I guess this guy should thank his older twin brothers for all the times he had to fight them both :-)
And it shows that it is vital in functional self-defense training to train also against more than one opponent.

Story:
Florida -- Getting carjacked, mugged or beaten up by total strangers at 11:00 in the morning outside a government building in Jacksonville isn't something most people worry about.

But it happened to a mortgage broker outside the Supervisor of Elections building, where his brother works.

"One guy got in the passenger side of the vehicle. He choked me in my truck. And the other one was trying to take my keys," the intended victim said.

He says he's got twin older brothers, and he's never fought them one on one. So when two came in for the attack at once, he says he could handle it.

Connecticut -- Woman uses keys as weapon during home invasion:

Police call the woman who owns this house courageous. As she arrived home Thursday and entered the back door she saw two strangers in the house and was attacked.

"They started to grapple a little bit at which time she was able to actually jab him with her car keys in the chest and pushed him off and she fled to safety," said Sgt. Scott Cunningham, Portland Police.

A campus incident

Some things are painfully clear:
- People tend to think "it don't happen here".
- A campus can be a dangerous place.
- Simple self-defense "tricks" may get you out of a bad spot.
- A push-in is a common way to gain access.

Also it is quite clear that the woman either panicked or was unaware she was being followed - all the time she opened the door to her room.

Story:
A man had followed a young woman onto the elevator and up to her floor and tried to push his way into her room after she unlocked the door.

The woman fought him off with a fist spiked with keys and he fled, but the incident was enough to worry many young women who never thought something like that could happen in their dorm.

I'm important

...and you're not!
So please be advised that I will attack you if you stand in my way! I will most probably use a cell phone, golf clubs, a hand bag or my car keys, since my hands are far to important to be wasted on you.

Story:
US Congress woman Cynthia McKinney has (of course) a good explanation why she punched that pesky cop who didn't know who she was.

The important person (sorry) very important person - was on her way to a very important meeting with some very important people, to discuss some very important issues.

Knowing when to quit

There are times to fight and times to let it be - times to get going and times to pull out. Knowing the difference is crucial in any self-defense scenario.
One step short or one step to many, and you may end up on the receiving end of damage!

Story:
A motorist filling up at a gas station took a carjacker by surprise when she fought back in Orange County, Florida.

It was about 4 p.m. Sunday when a man demanded the keys to her van.

She struggled with the man over the keys and at one point was punched in the nose. After he wrestled the keys from her, the man started to drive away. The woman then jumped in.

According to the Sheriff's Office they drove to North Hastings and Huggins streets, where the man jumped out. The woman started to chase him when the man jumped back into the van and took off.
