When losers lose

First these teens get their get their "tough" behinds kicked by one man - then being charged by police. Nothing better than a bunch of losers really losing out!

Kgw.com reports about four Seattle teenagers police say were active members of a local gang. The goons reportedly picked the wrong man to harass on a Metro bus late Friday night.

Police say when one of the teens attempted to take the man's glasses, he pulled a knife and fought back - swinging at his attackers in self defense. When the melee was over, four of the teens had cuts, including some with superficial cuts to their buttocks, and one had a dislocated shoulder. The man was not hurt.

'Bach attack'

Is this going to get the 'hip-hopping' individuals to move? Definitely. Will it remove the problem? Probably not.

I have mentioned this before, but it's worth repeating. While I worked the doors, smart DJ's knew how to "remove" unwanted individuals by playing music they absolutely hated. Also the (good) DJ's could often times spot brewing trouble and use music accordingly.
Needless to say - one of the best ways to get people out (and alert the bouncers) was to stop the music immediately when someone started a fight.

Story:
Washington -- Tacoma city authorities, fed up with gang activity in public places, are taking Bach their bus stop.

Transit workers are installing speakers this week to pump classical music from a Seattle radio station into the Tacoma Mall Transit Center. The tactic is designed to disperse young criminals who make drug deals at the bus stop or use public transportation to circulate between the mall and other trouble-prone places.

The attack by Bach, Brahms and Beethoven follows the theory that prompted the city to stage pinochle games on dangerous street corners: Jolting the routine in such spots throws criminals off balance.

"It's based on routine activity theory and situational crime prevention. You mix different types of activities in locations that are crime-ridden to change the composition of the environment," said a psychologist who chairs the Criminal Justice Department at Seattle University.

A 19-year-old male said troublemakers won't like the orchestral strains, but they'll probably just move somewhere out of earshot.

A different beat

Yep, more music stuff :-)
This may seem like a strange thing - using slower "old and boring" music to get rid of unwanted individuals. However, it is nothing new - and it works!
Any good bouncer/doorman, bartender, DJ or band will tell you how the music may directly affect the mood.
In places I have worked, music has been used as a way to end fights, alert the bouncers, turn away unwanted individuals and reduce the level of "aggression". So yes - the Cliff thing is still good :-)

Story:
UK -- A traditional funfair has discovered a novel way of scaring off gangs of hoodies - by playing Cliff Richard records.

The travelling steam fair was plagued by gangs of yobs who used to intimidate customers, until they accidentally discovered the hoodie repelling properties of Sir Cliff.

Now the fair uses the records the keep gangs of teenagers at bay, and have also discovered that the music actually attracts a new breed of customers - even if they are mainly old ladies.

A representative said: "We cater mainly for families, but we had a lot of young teenage gangs of hoodies around looking intimidating and putting all the families off, and they never spent any money either. They just scared good customers away."

"We usually play a lot of original 50s rock and roll, but the other day I accidentally put on a Cliff Richard B side called Travelling Light. All the hoodies pulled horrible faces and walked off."

"The next time, we tried it again, and it worked, so we bought a few more. The slow ones like Living Doll and The Young Ones are the most effective. Summer Holiday worked as well, but we try to stick to ones from the 50s to keep the feel of the fair authentic."

"We don't play them all the time because it wouldn't be fair on the staff - it's only when we feel the hoodies are starting to outnumber the families. We play some of the older records, and that gets rid of them."

Usually been drinking

You must be kidding; Consuming alcohol and walking alone through a secluded area at night "may increase the chances of being attacked". Wow, that is a huge surprise...

Story:
Edinburgh, Scotland -- Every week, according to police, one person is assaulted in the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links. The total number of (recorded) crimes in the area has soared from 68 in 2003-4 to 166 in 2006-7 according to police.

The majority of victims of serious assaults and hold-ups have usually been drinking, and they are white males aged between 21 and 25. They are mostly attacked by gangs of youths aged under 20 - many culprits in their mid teens.

"Pedestrians walking through the area at night after consuming alcohol may be increasing their chances of being attacked as they are less aware of their surroundings and therefore more vulnerable (...)"

Busted

In one word: Respect. This gent is really something! Karate, kung-fu, who cares - this is just one tough dude.

Story ('Karate kick Buster, 100, floors gang'):
Britain's oldest worker told on Wednesday how he fought off a gang of would-be muggers – using kung fu. Buster Martin showed that, even at 100, he still knew how to handle himself when he was confronted by the teenagers after a night at the pub.

The World War II veteran scared his three attackers so much they fled empty-handed. Mr Martin, a car washer-cum-mechanic, said: 'They just came at me and pushed me against a wall and tried to take my money from me.

'Then they pushed me on the floor and I went mad. I was lashing out on the floor and then I stood up and was kicking them all.

'I pushed one and kung fu kicked the other one between the legs and he let out a scream. They ran off scared after I did that and I still had all my money.'

Band of muggers

It is always sad when someone gets killed. Still, I applaud this gentleman for fighting back.
If someone decide to be a criminal, that person should also be prepared to pay the consequences. My sympathy will never be with the criminals ...

Story:
San Jose, Costa Rica: A tour group of U.S. senior citizens fought off a band of muggers in eastern Costa Rica, sending two of the assailants fleeing and killing a third, police said Thursday.

One of the tourists — a retired U.S. serviceman whom officials estimated was in his 70s — allegedly put one assailant in a headlock and broke his clavicle after the 20-year-old and two other men armed with a knife and gun held up their tour bus Wednesday, said the police chief of Limon, 130 kilometers east of San Jose.

(Un)happy slapping

UK -- A gang of teenagers attacked a man in a suspected happy-slapping incident in a busy shopping area.

But the incident turned against the youths as the man fought back and knocked one of them unconscious.

Two of the gang of eight 16 and 17- year-olds had to be taken to hospital and were later arrested.

31-year-old Curtis Mulcare from Brighton said he had been determined not to let the "gang of chavs" get away with attacking him.

The former amateur boxer, said: "I can't believe they attacked me. I'm a big bloke and I wouldn't have thought I was an obvious victim but they've just got no respect for anyone. They thought it was going to be happyslapping but it didn't end up too happy for them."

"Suggestive women"

Wow, this is one crazy dude - and not just any old crazy dude; Sheikh Taj el-Din Al Hilali is Australia's most prominent Muslim cleric no less ...
I say deport this madman immediately, or tell him to shut the f*** up!
At least lock him up so he don't have to see all these "suggestive" women.

Story:
Australia's most prominent Muslim cleric was threatened with deportation today after he was reported to have said that women who "sway suggestively" and do not cover up can provoke sexual assault by men.

In a sermon marking the end of Ramadan, Sheikh Taj el-Din Al Hilali told worshippers in Sydney that women who display their bodies were like "uncovered meat". He said that women should stay hidden at home, or wear the hijab, or Islamic scarf, in public.

Sheik Hilali's remarks are a clear reference to a high-profile trial involving a group of Muslim teenagers who committed a series of brutal gang rapes against Australian women in Sydney six years ago.

"Crossed legs" strike

Lose the gun, or lose the fun :-)

Story:
Colombia -- They are calling it the "crossed legs" strike.

Fretting over crime and violence, girlfriends and wives of gang members in the city of Pereira have called a ban on sex to persuade their menfolk to give up their guns.

After meeting with the mayor's office to discuss a disarmament programme, a group of women decided to deny their partners their conjugal rights and recorded a song for local radio to urge others to follow their example.

"We met the wives and girlfriends of gang members and they were worried some were not handing over their guns, and that is where they came up with the idea of a vigil or a sex strike," said a mayoral spokesman.

Presence of mind

India -- It was presence of mind that saved cardiologist K.R.K.S. Raju of Yousufguda from falling a prey to an extortion gang. The suspects, who were arrested on Thursday on the charge of kidnapping a real estate agent from Banjara Hills, tried to abduct Dr. Raju too. A few days ago, a member of the gang called up the doctor on his mobile phone claiming to be a police officer.

Dr. Raju was about to go to the hospital then. Saying he was an Assistant Commissioner of Police with the Intelligence wing, the caller requested him to come to his place to treat a patient. "Soon after I hung up the phone explaining that I cannot come, six persons posing as policemen drove in two vehicles to my house," the doctor explained.

As the doctor sat in his car to go to his hospital, one of them approached him saying their ACP had called up and gave a mobile phone. The caller said he was ACP Krishna Prasad and requested him to come in the car sent with the 'constables.'

"This is a security precaution doctor," the caller said.

But Dr. Raju grew suspicious since none of them wore police uniform. What strengthened his suspicion was the Tata Indica car in which the six persons came. "Police don't use Indica cars. I also found colour sprinkled over its number plate making it difficult to recognise the number," he said. Then, he made it clear that he cannot go with them and the gang members left.

Pocketknife, tactical skills

I strongly advice you to read these two stories.
They're about the same incident - a former US marine being attacked by four robbers armed with a shotgun and a gun.

It shows how this brave man sees himself and carries himself with sorrow and dignity in light of the tragic outcome (one of the assailants were killed).
It also shows how he did everything "by the book" as far as self-defense goes: Trying to run, yelling "fire", seeking a lighted area, choosing the place for the stand-off, fighting multiple attackers, using hands and feet to create distance, seizing opportunities, etc.
And it also points to the potential danger of even a small blade like a pocket knife.

Story:
A 36-year-old former Marine cook used a pocketknife to fend off a group of would-be robbers, killing one and wounding another, police said.

Thomas Autry, who authorities said will not be charged, was walking home from his job waiting tables Monday night when four people got out of a car and chased him, Atlanta police detective Danny Stephens said. One attacker had a shotgun, and another had a pistol.
