Did everything right

Florida -- Gainesville police say a man broke into a 20-year-old woman's apartment in the Windsor Park complex Thursday night, forced her into a bedroom and tried to rape her.

But police say the woman did everything right to prevent that from happening.

"Our victim violently fought back, kicked, screamed, scratched, did everything that we want her to do."

They're looking for a black male about 5' 8", 200 pounds.

Payphone

When using a payphone it's a common habit to face away from the door (or people) - facing the phone. This is a bad habit!

Try instead to have your back against the wall/phone. Yes I know this may make the conversation feel less "private", but you will be a much harder target to hit.

I suggest you begin to watch how people act when they're on a payphone or a cellular phone in public. Then you will see how easy it is for a criminal to set many of these people up for an assault or a theft.

Story:
Toronto, Canada -- Police are investigating after a 36-year-old woman was pulled from a payphone and sexually assaulted in the city’s east end early Saturday morning.

The victim was using a payphone at about 5:30 a.m. when a man grabbed her from behind and dragged her to a nearby grassy area, where she was forced to the ground and sexually assaulted, police said.

The woman fought with her attacker before he fled.

Drop 'em!

One punk - no pants - no pride - no purse!

Story:
Salem police responded to an attempted robbery at 7:13 a.m. at a Wal-Mart Store where two male subjects followed a woman to her vehicle.

Lt. Don Beeson said one of them grabbed her purse while she was putting items in her trunk. "She chased one and got him and pulled his pants down," Beeson said.

The police report said the man stated he had a gun in an attempt to have her let him go.

The robber dropped the purse and pulled his pants up while continuing to run to an older white, two-door vehicle that drove off.

More 'cane-do'

The attempted mugging of a senior citizen shortly before noon on Monday failed after the intended victim fenced off his shotgun-wielding attacker with a cane, according to a Greensboro Police Department press release.

83-year-old Robert Flynn was walking when a dark-colored car approached. A man inside the car asked for a cigarette, at which point Flynn said he did not have one. The attacker then exited the vehicle, pointed a shotgun at Flynn and demanded his money.

Flynn struck the shotgun with his cane and ran around the vehicle. The attacker again approached Flynn with the shotgun, prompting the man to batter him about the head and shoulders with his cane. The suspect retreated to his car empty handed and fled.

"This is a knife!"

With Australian outback hero Crocodile Dundee as her inspiration, an 80-year-old British pensioner foiled a knife-wielding burglar with an even bigger blade of her own.

When woken by a masked man holding a knife, Winifred Whelan screamed and ran downstairs to the kitchen.

Grabbing a giant carving knife, she told the startled intruder "You call that a knife? This is a knife" in an echo of the famous scene in the Crocodile Dundee film when actor Paul Hogan confronted a New York mugger.

Culture of violence

Marlin Mata has awakened from a coma she suffered after throwing herself from a moving bus to escape two men trying to rape her, but Peru is still deep in the nightmare of spiraling violence against women.

More than half of all Peruvian women over the age of 15 say they have suffered sexual or physical violence by men during their lifetime — one of the world’s highest rates.

Male frustration at high unemployment in Peru despite the country’ unprecedented economic growth since 2002 and a corrupt justice system that rarely makes convictions are exacerbating violence against women in an already macho society.

Stalking teen

Here's a "classic" example of someone stalking, and most certainly evaluating, an intended victim, and then striking as she approaches her resident.

It is scary that many people are not aware about 1. What to do if they are being followed, and 2. The fact that perpetrators usually strikes (make up their mind to strike) at a certain time.
This is usually as the intended victim is getting to his/her destination, or close to his/her destination.

Story:
Canada -- A 28-year-old Vancouver man was in court this week in connection with an alleged sexual assault on a teen in Burquitlam.

Last Friday, a 16-year-old girl boarded SkyTrain at Lougheed Town Centre to go shopping at MetroTown, according to Coquitlam RCMP.

During the ride, she noticed a man staring at her. He got off at the MetroTown station, followed her around the Burnaby mall and continued to follow her on her way home.

At around 4:45 p.m., Coquitlam RCMP said, the man sexually assaulted the girl just steps from her home.

The teen broke free and ran inside, and her father called police and watched the suspect as he was leaving. He kept the suspect in sight until policed arrived.

The suspect is "well known to police" for similar offences, police said.

'Can-do'

I suspect this customer is rewarded for his bravery - free applesauce for life maybe?

Story:
A customer at a city grocery tackled an armed robber and beat him with a can of applesauce when he refused to drop his gun, police said.

The suspect shot himself in the head during the struggle, and passed out after the 66-year-old customer administered four blows to the head with the Mott's applesauce.

Customer Thomas Santana, who is 5-foot-4, grabbed the 6-foot-1 gunman from behind when he was on the freezer, and with help from Gomez knocked him down.

Family: 1 - Robber: 0

This is one tough family - a well-knit fighting unit too.
Read the story, it's too funny!

Story:
While covering his head amid the barrage of flying fists and feet, his legs bound with a jump-rope by children half his size, a bruised and bloodied Craig Mack had a sudden realization, police say: He'd picked the wrong family to mess with.

The head-butt

Having witnessed how a couple of young boys bang their heads full force into a one-inch thick steel bomb-shelter door to "make it sing" I have to disagree somewhat with this scientist.
If you know how to use it properly, the age old head-butt is a formidable self-defense weapon! It is also quite easy to defend against - if you see it coming...
You just need to bend you head and turn it sideways ever so slightly. The effect is that the attacker hits you where your skull is most solid (think of the point where horns would be placed). This point is the same used for a "proper" head-butt.
The technique called "Scottish kiss" or "Liverpool kiss" is brutal and highly effective.

Story:
It's a guy thing.

The head-butt reared its ugly head at the weekend when France's Zinedine Zidane head-butted the chest of Italian defender Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final.

"Most animals that fight that way have skulls built to take it. We don't appear to be built that way," says Katherine Ralls, senior scientist at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington. "But I guess when you get so much adrenaline and testosterone going, it's butt first and think later."

Bad bouncing

Here's a small and rather disturbing clip from a surveillance camera showing how a bouncer (doorman) is not supposed to work if he/she wishes to stay alive...
Everything from the threatening and negative gestures, smoking (!) on the job, lack of visual control etc. are text-book examples of someone who is not suitable for the job.
The clip also clearly shows the dangers and nature of a knife attack.
I only hope these guys wore a protective vest...

You can watch the clip here (YouTube), or download it in lesser quality here (1.86MB, flv file).

You will need to have the free flv-player installed to view flv clips on your own computer.

Almost abducted

Talk about not trusting your instincts...
If an unknown man - looking as scruffy as this fellow here - is following your family around an amusement park, maybe it's time to ask security to check it out? It could just be that there's something fishy going on?
Trust me on this - if you feel that you're being stalked or followed something IS going on! Paranoid? I don't think so, these predators are out there somewhere constantly looking for an opportunity and an easy prey.

Story:
Clay County authorities are investigating after a 6-year-old girl said a stranger tried to kidnap her Tuesday night at Worlds of Fun.

The girl told police she was waiting with a friend while her mother and stepfather rode a roller coaster. The girl said a man approached and told her that he wanted to show her something, and he led her away from her friend.

The girl said the man picked her up and said he was taking her to his car to watch fireworks, but the girl became scared and was able to escape and return to her friend.

The child's mother told police that the man had been following them around the park. She said she had never seen the man before Tuesday.

No help

So you think that you will get help if you're being attacked?
I really hope you will, but do remember that most people are afraid.

Story:
South Africa -- Everyone watched but no one did anything as a young woman recently battled an assailant wielding a screwdriver and demanding money.

A large crowd gathered among the Saturday shoppers outside a wholesaler in the industrial area, but not one bystander tried to help the victim.

The woman told the Hermanus Times that she is “still in shock” and asked that her name, her place of work and the name of the wholesaler not be divulged.

It was 'Junior', not me!

Holy Moses - reading things like this really makes me ashamed to belong to the same gender. I know guys can be real simple, but this...
There are things that are pathetic - things that are way past pathetic - and then there's stuff like this. Mama Mia!
Kind of reminds me about the (great) song: "My piano's been drinking - not me".

Story:
Nigeria -- A 21-year-old man who was Wednesday convicted for attempted rape told a Jabi Chief Magistrates' Court that his penis should be blamed for the offence.

In her judgment, Chief Magistrate Ajoke Ad-epoju averred that though the court could reason with the plea of the convict, she was not impressed by his attitude.
