Hazards at work, 17

A 21-year-old resident of a Cumru Township group home criticized for lack of security was arrested Friday and charged in the rape of an employee at the facility.

The man, who has been at the center of an ongoing zoning dispute with area residents claiming the facility is a danger to the community, is charged with rape, attempted rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse and indecent assault.

Cumru police said the man raped a woman who works at the group home about 4:30 p.m. Thursday when she was left alone with him.

The woman tried numerous times to summon help during the 30-minute attack but was unable to reach anyone by screaming or hitting an alert button on her cell phone, police said.

The attacker was eventually pulled off the woman when a nurse arrived to check on another resident, heard cries for help and got staff from a different part of the facility, police said.

The woman was treated at a hospital for unspecified injuries.
